Guwahati, Sep 22 (NationPress) Assam's Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma issued a firm warning on Monday against any potential disturbances from anti-social elements during the funeral of the beloved singer Zubeen Garg, scheduled for Tuesday.
Speaking to the press, CM Sarma emphasized, "The farewell for our cherished music legend must be conducted with utmost dignity. Key figures like Union Parliamentary Affairs Minister Kiren Rijiju, Meghalaya’s Deputy Chief Minister Prestone Tynsong, and senior officials from Arunachal Pradesh are expected to attend Garg's last rites. We will not tolerate any disruptions and will implement strict measures against anyone attempting to interfere with the ceremony."
He further noted that certain individuals had tried to cause disturbances during the procession when Zubeen Garg's remains were transported to Guwahati from the Lokpriya Gopinath Bordoloi International Airport.
"The police have identified a group that attempted to disrupt Garg's journey from the airport to the Sarusajai Sports Complex. They will face consequences in due time," he stated.
CM Sarma indicated that the funeral procession would be kept simple and respectful, with only a limited convoy accompanying the vehicle carrying his remains.
"In addition to the ambulance, a small bus with his wife, close relatives, and friends will accompany the remains. No additional vehicles will be allowed in the procession. Just as we ensured a smooth transport from the airport, we will maintain this dignity on the way to the cremation site," he elaborated.
Upon arrival at the cremation grounds, the deceased singer's remains will be carried by pallbearers from the Assam Police from the highway to the venue.
A guard of honor and a gun salute will precede the final rites, which will be conducted by a priest as per the family's wishes.
"His family is coordinating with the priest, and once they arrive, the rituals will proceed according to their preferences. We will respect their wishes," CM Sarma added.
To maintain order during this solemn occasion, the state government has enforced strict security and traffic regulations.
CM Sarma stated that vehicles from the Jagiroad approach will not be allowed on the day of the funeral, although those heading to Meghalaya will have access.
Traffic from the Jorabat side will also be controlled for four to five hours to ensure a smooth and dignified ceremony.
