This position has been unoccupied since Nitin Patel stepped down after nearly three years of successful service, leaving the CoE in March of this year. Patel, a former physio for the Indian team, managed the recovery of prominent players such as Jasprit Bumrah, Shreyas Iyer, KL Rahul, and Mohammed Shami.
The BCCI has stated that the preferred applicant should possess a master's degree (or ideally a doctorate) in sports science or a related field, along with at least five years of leadership experience in managing multi-disciplinary performance teams.
Applicants are expected to have a solid background in high-performance sports environments, showcasing experience in athlete development, clinical governance, and strategic planning. “The BCCI COE is eager to find an accomplished and visionary Head of Sports Science and Medicine to spearhead its multi-disciplinary team,” noted the BCCI.
The responsibilities associated with this role include formulating strategic performance plans, overseeing injury prevention and rehabilitation, fostering athlete development, and integrating sports science services across national teams and the CoE. Additionally, the position will involve establishing collaborations with international institutes focusing on research and innovation,” stated the BCCI in a recent announcement.
The Head – Sports Science and Medicine will collaborate closely with VVS Laxman, the current Head of Cricket at the CoE, to provide strategic performance planning and management advice.
The selected candidate will also interact with the Head of Physiotherapy (CoE), Team India Head of Physiotherapy, Head of Strength & Conditioning (CoE), and Team India Strength & Conditioning Coach, along with administrators from state associations, cricket operations executives, and state coaches.
“This role will also entail close coordination with National Team and COE coaches, COE operations staff, and the Head of Cricket Education to ensure that Sports Science and Medicine (SS&M) services are seamlessly integrated across all levels of the game, thus driving optimal performance outcomes over the short, medium, and long term,” emphasized the BCCI.
In addition, the BCCI is also calling for applications for the CoE resident faculty in both batting and bowling. The selected individuals will contribute to and deliver the BCCI’s national coach education programs across certification Levels 0–3.
The ideal candidates should be former first-class or international cricketers who are certified BCCI Level-2 or Level-3 Coaches, possessing a minimum of five years in coaching at state or elite teams. They should also have proficiency in performance analysis tools and digital platforms, along with familiarity with LMS tools, coach development systems, and performance tracking software.
