New Delhi, March 19 (NationPress) As the 2025 season of the Indian Premier League (IPL) approaches, Shubman Gill, the captain of Gujarat Titans, asserts that the game's tempo has advanced to a stage where a batting team could conceivably reach a score of 300 in a match.
The previous season, IPL 2024, witnessed remarkable batting feats, highlighted by Punjab Kings successfully chasing down 262 against Kolkata Knight Riders and Sunrisers Hyderabad posting a record total of 287/3 against the Royal Challengers Bengaluru, alongside achieving 125/0, the highest power-play score ever recorded in the tournament against Delhi Capitals.
"The game's pace has escalated to a level where it seems feasible for us to score 300 in a match. Last year, we got very close a few times. The Impact Player rule adds an exciting element, making the IPL even more thrilling. One of the best aspects of the IPL is that every match introduces a new player who shines as a star.
“You frequently observe underrated talents delivering remarkable performances. The tournament's format, featuring regular matches and travel, keeps players engaged. If you’re on a winning streak, the momentum can propel you forward with three, four, or even five victories in succession. However, injuries can complicate matters.
“When a couple of key players get injured, finding adequate substitutes can be challenging. Yet, despite these obstacles, the IPL remains the most exhilarating cricket event, and each season offers fresh experiences for players and fans alike," Gill shared with JioHotstar.
Gill, who served as vice-captain during India's victorious Champions Trophy campaign in 2025, reminisced about his early impressions of the IPL and his admiration for, as well as his encounter with, Sachin Tendulkar, who represented the Mumbai Indians.
"I recall attending three to four matches with my father at the Tau Devi Lal Stadium in Panchkula. In the second or third year of the IPL, the Mumbai Indians came there for practice. I was around nine or ten at the time. I even have a picture with Sachin Sir and Glenn Maxwell.
“I was tossing balls to them during their practice sessions. These are some of my earliest memories of the IPL. I felt extremely nervous, but I was already aware of Sachin Sir. He was the reason I started playing cricket. My father is his biggest admirer. Although my dad never collected posters, we had Sachin's posters in our village.
GT will kick off their campaign against Punjab Kings at the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad, and Gill discussed the strengths of his team, which claimed the IPL title in their inaugural season in 2022.
"We possess a formidable fast-bowling line-up. Rashid has been a key figure for us, and we have explosive batsmen like Rutherford, Philips, and Butler. Some talented Indian players such as Mahipal and Sai provide additional depth to our squad. Achieving balance is critical for success in a lengthy tournament like the IPL.
"Losing two or three matches consecutively isn't overly concerning if you’re playing correctly and making smart decisions. Consistency in team selection and strategy is essential. The more you base your game on probability and logic, the better your chances of advancing.
"Once you make it to the knockout phase, it’s vital to be aggressive and positive. In all the qualifiers and finals I've participated in, I've found that teams with the right intention have the highest likelihood of winning," he concluded.
