New Delhi, April 16 (NationPress) India’s goal to host the 100th edition of the Commonwealth Games in 2030 encounters significant competition as Commonwealth Sport has officially reported receiving expressions of interest (EOIs) from seven countries and territories spanning four continents.
Both Canada and Nigeria have publicly indicated their desire to host the esteemed multi-sport event. Additionally, two unnamed nations have also expressed interest in organizing the 2030 Games, while New Zealand is reportedly considering the 2034 edition as part of a long-term hosting strategy.
This influx of international interest highlights the increasing rivalry for what is regarded as a landmark edition of the Games, commemorating 100 years since the inaugural Commonwealth Games held in 1930.
Commonwealth Sport CEO Katie Sadleir remarked, “We are excited about the remarkable interest from across the Commonwealth in hosting the 2030 centennial Commonwealth Games and beyond. This enthusiastic response from four of our six regions emphasizes the significance of the Commonwealth Games and its standing as a premier multi-sport event in the global sporting calendar, alongside the Olympic Games and Paralympics, showcasing the strength and allure of our reimagined Games model.”
“Over the past year, we have made remarkable strides, securing a host for 2026 and a pipeline of potential hosts for 2030 and beyond. The pivotal role that Scotland has played in this transition is immense, demonstrating foresight, determination, and innovative thinking by stepping up to host the Games in Glasgow in 2026 within a remarkably short timeframe, building on their legacy from Glasgow 2014.
India submitted its Letter of Intent (LOI) to Commonwealth Games Federation president Chris Jenkins in February.
India’s proposal to host the Games is timely as the Commonwealth Sport movement evolves to endorse a more adaptable and sustainable event model. The forthcoming 2026 Games in Glasgow—a city that rose to the occasion within a stringent timeframe—is being recognized as a bridge to a “re-imagined” Games format that could influence the future of major multi-sport events.
“Glasgow’s groundbreaking example will broaden the range of countries eligible to host the Games in upcoming decades,” Sadleir added. “This pipeline also instills confidence in our commercial partners and reaffirms the Commonwealth Games as a significant milestone for athletes.”
