Day One of PGTI Open: Wallin, Khan, and Friedrichsen Lead
Synopsis
Key Takeaways
Nuh (Haryana), March 19 (NationPress) - After the opening day of the DP World PGTI Open, Adam Wallin, Rashid Khan, and Sebastian Friedrichsen are all tied for the lead, each holding a one-stroke advantage.
Swedish golfer Wallin and Indian Khan, both among the early entrants at Classic Golf & Country Club, each posted impressive rounds of six under par, scoring 66. Friedrichsen, joining them later in the day, also made his mark with four birdies and an eagle through 12 holes, before play was halted due to fading light.
Wallin, who is embarking on his inaugural full season with the HotelPlanner Tour, combined five birdies with a single bogey, finishing strong with an eagle on the par five 18th. The 24-year-old, who celebrated three victories on the Nordic Golf League last year, expressed satisfaction with his performance.
“I had a slightly slow start,” he reflected. “I played reasonably well on the front nine but missed a few putts. However, I gathered momentum on the back nine and finished strongly.”
“I made straightforward birdies on 12 and 14, and I hit a fantastic shot into the par five 16th, finishing with a nice three-iron to five feet for an eagle,” he added.
Khan, who ranked in the top 30 at the previous week's Indorama Ventures Open Golf Championship, equaled Wallin’s score after a round filled with six birdies, one eagle, and two bogeys. The 35-year-old is keen to build on his positive performance from last year, where he tied for 11th at Classic Golf and Country Club. “I’m quite pleased,” he said. “I got off to a good start with birdies on both the second and sixth holes.”
“I was all over the place today, yet somehow managed to hit the greens. My putting has been solid over the last three weeks, and I'm focused on creating birdie opportunities. This course demands precise putting and solid tee shots, especially on the front nine.”
“I feel my game is improving, which allows me to enjoy my golf more. I'm struggling with my driver, but I'm successfully managing my scores,” he remarked.
In a tie for fourth place are Irishman Conor Purcell, South African Yurav Premlall, Spaniard Albert Boneta, and Austrian Lukas Nemecz, all at five under par.
Friedrichsen, one of the joint leaders, will return to the course at 6:50 am to finish his first round before the second round begins at 7:20 am local time. Wallin will tee off alongside Premlall and Honey Baisoya at 12:45 pm, while Khan is scheduled to start at 1:45 pm with Purcell and Nemecz.
