Sports Community Pays Tribute to Former PM Manmohan Singh, Visionary of Economic Change

New Delhi, Dec 27 (NationPress) The sports community has expressed its sorrow over the passing of Dr. Manmohan Singh, a visionary leader recognized as the architect of economic transformation.

Dr. Singh departed this life on Thursday night at the age of 92 after being admitted to AIIMS due to a decline in his health. He leaves behind his wife, Gursharan Kaur, and their three daughters.

In tribute to the former Prime Minister, the Indian women's cricket team donned black armbands during their third ODI against the West Indies on Friday, while the team led by Rohit Sharma also wore black armbands on the second day of the Boxing Day Test against Australia in Melbourne.

Two-time World Champion boxer Nikhat Zareen expressed her condolences, stating, "India mourns the loss of Dr. Manmohan Singh, a visionary leader and the architect of economic transformation. His wisdom and humility will always be remembered. Rest in peace."

Former Indian cricketer Harbhajan Singh took to X to share his sadness over the news, saying, "I am saddened by the sudden passing of our former Prime Minister, a true gentleman and a visionary leader, Dr. Manmohan Singh Ji. What distinguished him was his calm and steady leadership during crises, his skill in navigating complex political landscapes, and his steadfast belief in India's potential."

He added, "The nation will always remember Dr. Saheb for his contributions. My deepest condolences to his family and relatives."

Former India opener Virender Sehwag also expressed his heartfelt condolences on the passing of their former Prime Minister.

Former Olympic wrestler Sakshi Malik shared her tribute on X, saying, "No one could match his stature, he was like the sky yet walked with his head bowed. A salute to our former Prime Minister, Dr. Manmohan Singh Ji. Paying my respects, may God grant peace to his soul."

Wrestler Vinesh Phogat remarked, "India has lost a remarkable leader who elevated the country with his extraordinary wisdom, simplicity, and vision. Dr. Manmohan Singh was not merely a Prime Minister but a thinker, economist, and a true patriot. His calm leadership and economic foresight provided new direction for our nation, from the 1991 economic reforms to establishing India's global presence."

She continued, "His humility was profound, and wisdom was evident in every word he spoke. His contributions will always be remembered. You will forever reside in our hearts, Sir. An era has ended!"

Former women's hockey captain Rani Rampal shared her sentiments on X, saying, "You will be missed, sir #ManmohanSingh ji."

Dr. Singh, who served as Prime Minister from 2004 to 2014, was recognized for his pivotal role in guiding India's economy through a significant liberalization phase.

He is frequently credited for spearheading major economic reforms in 1991 during his tenure as finance minister, which modernized India's economy and facilitated its integration into the global market.
