Ahmedabad, Dec 8 (NationPress) Former Indian tennis star Rohan Bopanna described the kickoff of the seventh season of the Tennis Premier League (TPL) as enjoyable, thrilling, and accessible for all. The upcoming season is slated to take place at the Gujarat University Tennis Stadium from December 9 to 14. With this edition, the league marks its seventh consecutive year, becoming only the fourth sports league in India to reach this remarkable achievement.
This season signifies a significant expansion, as TPL ventures outside of Maharashtra for the very first time. Bringing the tournament to Ahmedabad allows the league to extend its influence and cultivate new communities of tennis enthusiasts throughout India.
Season 7 promises an action-packed week of tennis featuring a robust lineup of internationally ranked players, alongside India's finest talents. Eight franchises will participate in TPL's fast-paced format, which includes Women’s Singles, Mixed Doubles, Men’s Singles, and Men’s Doubles, with each round carrying a value of 25 points.
From December 9 to 13, each team will compete in five league matches, with the top four teams progressing to the semi-finals and the final on December 14.
This season will showcase an impressive roster, including Grand Slam champion Rohan Bopanna, World No. 26 Luciano Darderi, and Britain’s premier tennis player Dan Evans. Additionally, India's leading talents, such as Shrivalli Bhamidipaty and Sahaja Yamalapalli, will add formidable strength to an already competitive field. With marquee players in every franchise, the competition is poised for an exhilarating week.
Rohan Bopanna of SG Pipers Bengaluru stated, “With twenty-five game points, matches become fast-paced and thrilling. Now that I’m retired, this format is ideal for me. It’s enjoyable, energetic, and for the youth, it’s a fantastic format to both watch and participate in. Every point counts, so starting strong from the first rally is crucial. Being broadcasted allows fans to witness every player, not just the top stars. Events like TPL provide everyone across the nation the opportunity to follow all players, which is incredible.”
Luciano Darderi, representing the Rajasthan Rangers, expressed enthusiasm about participating in the Tennis Premier League for the first time, stating, “I’ve heard so much about the league's energy and the passion Indian fans bring to each match. Competing in this format will be a new experience for me, and I can’t wait to contribute to the team while enjoying the vibrant atmosphere in Ahmedabad.”
Dan Evans, playing for the Gurgaon Grand Slammers, remarked, “It’s wonderful to be in India for the first time. I’m eager to join my team and represent the Gurgaon Grand Slammers. I’ve always loved playing in India, and I understand how passionate the fans are here. The TPL format is quick and competitive, and I’m thrilled to be part of this team dynamic and support a strong campaign in Ahmedabad.”
