Newly-appointed Chennai Super Kings (CSK) head coach Zaheer Khan has said that modern cricket technology cannot substitute a player's presence of mind during high-pressure match situations, outlining a coaching philosophy built on empowering players and blending data analytics with old-school, on-field adaptability.

A New Chapter at CSK

Five-time Indian Premier League (IPL) champions CSK officially announced Zaheer Khan as their new head coach on Monday, 22 September 2025, following the departure of Stephen Fleming from the role in July. This marks Zaheer's first stint as head coach of any cricket team. Prior to this appointment, he served as mentor of Lucknow Super Giants during IPL 2025 and spent four years — 2018 to 2022 — with Mumbai Indians, first as director of cricket and later as global head of development.

The Tech vs. Instinct Debate

Speaking in a video posted on CSK's official YouTube channel, the 2011 ODI World Cup winner was candid about what he sees as a growing problem in the modern game. 'One thing which I've been very vocal about in modern-day cricket is the technology playing a big role, and it's taking away a whole lot from on-ground thinking. The adaptability, the situational awareness — all those kinds of aspects that you talk about and for youngsters, it's very important to keep up with that,' Zaheer said.

He was careful to stress that data and technology still have a legitimate role — but only up to the boundary rope. 'It's very important that you use the technology, data, and analyse things. But when it comes to actually going out there on the field and doing it, you've got to have that presence of mind,' he added. He argued that no software can account for the fluid, ever-shifting dynamics of a live match: 'Every game is not going to be comparable to the previous one with regard to a particular situation. So, I think that's something tech will not be able to take you there.'

Old-School Thinking as a Competitive Edge

Zaheer framed his philosophy as a deliberate call back to fundamentals. 'For me, it's about encouraging conversations and learning through those conversations. It's something which is, in a way, very old-school thinking. But I think if you're able to balance what's happening currently with the decision-making on the field, it'll work as a good blend to achieve something special,' he said. This approach, he noted, aligns with what has historically made CSK successful — a franchise he described as one that has consistently stayed 'ahead of the curve, understanding and adapting to different situations.'

MS Dhoni's Role and Ruturaj Gaikwad's Captaincy

Laying out his roadmap for IPL 2026, Zaheer identified two pillars: the continued guidance of legendary former captain MS Dhoni and the growth of young captain Ruturaj Gaikwad. 'MS guidance, I think, is going to be very crucial,' he said. On Gaikwad, Zaheer spoke about the importance of helping the young captain 'empower himself and the experience in the squad' — building a collective think-tank rather than relying on one individual's decision-making. He described CSK as a 'settled franchise' with strong processes already in place, while acknowledging that a new coaching setup will inevitably come with a learning curve. Notably, this is the first time in over a decade that CSK will operate without Fleming, who shaped the franchise's culture across multiple title-winning campaigns.
