Assam CM: Only Nehru and Gandhi Surnames Earn Respect in Congress

Guwahati, Dec 19 (NationPress) Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma has launched a direct attack on the Congress party, asserting on Wednesday that outside of the Nehru and Gandhi surnames, no individual commands respect within this historic political organization.
Sarma raised questions regarding the genuine respect that Rahul Gandhi holds for Babasaheb Ambedkar. He shared two images on his X account; one depicts Rahul Gandhi holding a portrait of Ambedkar, while the other shows a Congress leader placing Ambedkar's image on the ground alongside Amethi MP.
The Chief Minister stated, “Respect in the Gandhi family is a privilege only for those with the Nehru/Gandhi surname. This image clearly demonstrates the level of respect Rahul Gandhi gives to Babasaheb Ambedkar. There exists a significant disparity between what the Congress party preaches and what it practices.”
In the meantime, Home Minister Amit Shah sought to clarify the ongoing controversy surrounding his remarks about Ambedkar, attributing blame to Congress for 'distorting and twisting' his speech in the Rajya Sabha for political gain.
During a press conference at the BJP HQ, Shah labeled Congress as an anti-Ambedkar, anti-reservation, and anti-Constitution party, accusing it of reverting to its old tactics of spreading misinformation over the Ambedkar issue.
Shah asserted that his comments regarding B.R. Ambedkar during the constitutional debate in the Rajya Sabha had been deliberately misrepresented by Congress, citing previous instances of 'fake news' in the lead-up to the 2024 Lok Sabha elections.
He emphasized the difference in how the BJP and Congress honor national icons, stating, “I would never dream of disrespecting the architect of the Constitution.”
Responding firmly to Congress’ accusations, Shah recalled the historical misdeeds of the Congress party, noting that it was the same party that undermined the Constitution by enforcing Emergency and has shown disrespect to valiant soldiers.
Shah directly accused the Congress of habitually resorting to deceptive tactics and smear campaigns, manipulating facts for its advantage.
He mentioned, “In the early 1950s, Congress leaders launched a campaign against B.R. Ambedkar to defeat him in elections,” adding that Jawaharlal Nehru’s animosity towards Ambedkar was well-documented.
Shah pointed out that Ambedkar was denied the Bharat Ratna for many years post-Independence, while Congress leaders like Nehru and Indira Gandhi awarded themselves the Bharat Ratna. It was only after Congress lost power that Ambedkar received the nation’s highest civilian honor.
