New Delhi, April 9 (NationPress) In a strong endorsement of the Women’s Reservation Bill, Lucknow's Mayor Sushma Kharakwal commended Prime Minister Narendra Modi for his extraordinary commitment to uplifting women throughout the nation. Kharakwal expressed her appreciation, stating, “I sincerely thank the Prime Minister for considering the needs of his sisters. This Bill was first introduced in 1975, then again in 1996 and 2008, but progress was stagnant. Now, our Prime Minister has reintroduced it as he promised. Through initiatives like the Jan Dhan Yojana and housing allocations, he has significantly empowered women and elevated their status. By presenting this Bill, you have truly captured the hearts of all women.”
She further emphasized the importance of women in governance, saying, “Just as women manage their homes and budgets, they approach societal responsibilities similarly. For instance, in my role at the municipal corporation, I meticulously plan our operations. The contributions women make in such areas benefit both the nation and society.”
Kharakwal also acknowledged the Prime Minister’s efforts in enhancing women's representation in leadership roles. “Since you took office in 2014, your unwavering support for women has been evident, including appointing a woman as President. The Governor of Uttar Pradesh is a woman, and I am also a woman in leadership. The respect you have shown to women is unparalleled among previous Prime Ministers,” she remarked.
The government is set to propose changes to the Nari Shakti Vandan Act (Women Reservation Act) during the special Parliament session scheduled for April 16, 17, and 18. This Bill aims to reserve 33% of seats for women in both the Lok Sabha and state Assemblies.
In a recent article shared on his website, PM Modi encouraged citizens to disseminate it widely and urged political parties to rally behind the legislation. He called for collective action during the upcoming parliamentary sessions.
He stressed the critical need for women’s reservation in legislative bodies, describing it as a pivotal measure that would invigorate India’s democracy and promote participation.
PM Modi articulated the significance of this reform, stating that any delay in implementing women’s reservation would be “deeply unfortunate.” He emphasized that this initiative is not just a policy adjustment but a historic imperative for enhancing democratic institutions and ensuring equal representation.
On social media platform X, PM Modi stated, “The reservation for women in legislative bodies is essential at this moment! This will enhance our democracy, making it more vibrant and participatory. Any postponement of this reservation would be profoundly regrettable.”
