Ethics Committee to Review Obscene Comment Controversy: Karnataka Legislative Council Chairman

Bengaluru, Dec 21 (NationPress) Chairman of the Karnataka Legislative Council, Basavaraj Horatti, has confirmed that the ongoing controversy regarding the obscene remarks made by BJP MLC C.T. Ravi and Minister for Women and Child Welfare, Laxmi Hebbalkar, will be referred to the ‘Ethics Committee’. Future actions will be determined based on their findings.

During a press interaction in Mandya, Horatti addressed inquiries concerning allegations about a recording of C.T. Ravi's offensive comment, stating: "Nothing is finalized yet. The 'Ethics Committee' is our highest authority. They will investigate the situation and provide a report, and we will proceed according to their recommendations."

He continued, "We have examined the allegations against both Minister Hebbalkar and BJP MLC C.T. Ravi. Once our session concludes, the microphones and channels are disabled. A team consisting of the Secretary, Deputy Secretary, Additional Secretary, and Under Secretary has reviewed the recordings, but we could not find any evidence during our investigation.

"Currently, there are claims that some channels have broadcasted the recording, and we will investigate that. Nothing is over yet. If I ascertain that the allegations are valid, I will know how to proceed accordingly."

"Our microphones are turned off instantly at the end of the session. We are unaware of the actions of other channels. If the recordings are provided, they could be reviewed even today. I have convened a meeting, and in accordance with our rules, the matter will be forwarded to the committee,” Horatti emphasized.

“Regardless of who is involved, such incidents should not occur within our council. There are committees in place to investigate the matter, and it will be referred to them,” he stressed.

Horatti further stated, “According to the law, I should have been notified about the arrest, and the police informed me on Friday regarding C.T. Ravi’s arrest and the legal sections under which he has been charged.”

On Thursday, a scene of chaos erupted during a heated debate in the Legislative Council when C.T. Ravi allegedly labeled Congress MP and Leader of Opposition in the Lok Sabha, Rahul Gandhi, as a "drug addict".

Minister Laxmi Hebbalkar objected to these comments, accusing Ravi of being a "murderer".

In retaliation, the BJP leader purportedly directed an obscene term towards the minister. Following Minister Laxmi's complaint, police arrested MLC Ravi.

Subsequently, on Friday, the High Court provided interim relief to C.T. Ravi, ordering his immediate release.
