What is the 'Atal Lecture Series' Launched by Gujarat to Honor Vajpayee’s Centenary?

Gandhinagar, July 17 (NationPress) The government of Gujarat has initiated the 'Atal Lecture Series' in Gandhinagar to commemorate the centenary of the late Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee.

The first session, collaboratively organized by ARTD-GAD and SPIPA with assistance from 'The Secretariat', was attended by Dr. Soumya Kanti Ghosh, a member of the PM’s Economic Advisory Council and Group Chief Economic Advisor at SBI, along with Gujarat Chief Secretary Pankaj Joshi.

In his remarks, Joshi stated that the lecture series represents more than a mere homage; it is a comprehensive year-long initiative aimed at delving into Vajpayee’s governance style and philosophy. He highlighted that Vajpayee’s dedication to public service was instrumental in establishing the foundation for the current 'Good Governance Day', celebrated annually on December 25 across India.

He added that the series aspires to motivate youth, students, and citizens by illuminating democratic principles, development, and foreign policy—topics that were pivotal to Vajpayee.

Dr. Ghosh elaborated on Vajpayee’s role in transforming India's economy, reflecting on significant policy changes during his administration, including banking reforms, the telecom revolution, privatization, fiscal policies, and defense strategies like Operation Shakti.

He underscored how these reforms were vital in shaping modern India and served as the groundwork for initiatives like PM-KISAN and MSME credit support during the COVID-19 pandemic.

The inaugural event was attended by senior bureaucrats, including Additional Chief Secretaries Jayanti Ravi and S.J. Haider, along with a large number of government officials and employees. The ‘Atal Lecture Series’ is expected to proceed throughout the year in partnership with prominent national and state institutions to explore critical policy matters.

Former Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee had a profound and lasting bond with Gujarat, both politically and in terms of development. Recognized for his vision of inclusive growth and effective governance, Vajpayee’s tenure was marked by significant infrastructure projects that greatly benefited Gujarat, such as the Golden Quadrilateral highway network that enhanced connectivity within the state.

His leadership also signified the onset of essential economic reforms and liberalization that spurred Gujarat’s industrial expansion. Vajpayee was respected across political lines in Gujarat for his statesmanship and calm yet resolute leadership, maintaining strong relationships with Gujarat’s political figures, including then Chief Minister Narendra Modi.
