Will Gujarat's Annual 'Sujalam Sufalam Jal Abhiyan' Launch Earlier This Year?
Synopsis
Key Takeaways
Gandhinagar, Feb 4 (NationPress) The government of Gujarat has announced that it will kick off its annual Sujalam Sufalam Jal Abhiyan water conservation initiative on February 21, commencing earlier than in prior years.
This strategic decision is designed to expedite water storage preparations ahead of the monsoon season and bolster the state's readiness for the upcoming rains.
The announcement followed a Cabinet meeting led by Chief Minister Bhupendra Patel in Gandhinagar.
State government spokesperson and Minister Jitu Vaghani shared, "To ensure swift completion of water conservation efforts before the monsoon, the Chief Minister has instructed that the Sujalam Sufalam Jal Abhiyan commence in February. Consequently, the campaign will be launched statewide starting on February 21."
Minister Vaghani highlighted that this campaign is part of a longstanding initiative by the state government over the last eight years to improve water availability through the collaboration of various departments.
"The Chief Minister has been guiding this annual campaign, aligning it with broader national efforts initiated by Prime Minister Narendra Modi aimed at conserving water and enhancing storage," he added.
This year's campaign will prioritize the early deepening of lakes to facilitate water storage, even if the monsoon arrives earlier than anticipated.
The scheduling also coincides with the Holi festival on March 3, a time when many laborers return to their hometowns.
"Launching the campaign sooner will help mitigate delays in carrying out development projects," Minister Vaghani remarked.
Over the past eight years, the Sujalam Sufalam Jal Abhiyan has had a profound impact.
From 2018 to 2025, this initiative has contributed to the storage of nearly 13,994 million cubic feet of water across Gujarat.
Additionally, it has generated over 26 million man-days of employment for laborers involved, supporting both livelihoods and community water security.
By launching this year's campaign early, the state government aims to further enhance water storage infrastructure, ensuring a sufficient supply for both rural and urban regions ahead of the monsoon.
