Will the India-US Trade Agreement Make Goods Cheaper?
Synopsis
Key Takeaways
Mumbai, Feb 3 (NationPress) The recent agreement between India and the United States to lower mutual tariffs is expected to result in a decrease in prices for a variety of goods, including technology hardware and certain agricultural imports in India.
Items like laptops, electronic devices, and consumer technology may see a drop in pricing, while sectors such as processed foods, packaged items, and home appliances may also benefit from reduced import costs, as per reports.
Additionally, agricultural commodities such as pulses, dairy products, and processed foods could experience lower import duties, which may help to alleviate some of the pressure of rising food prices, according to reports. However, the official terms and conditions of the agreement from the government are still pending.
The India-US trade agreement is a significant milestone in redefining trade dynamics between the globe's two largest democracies, and industries like textiles and apparel in India are likely to gain from reduced tariffs.
The gems and jewellery sector, a significant export category from India, is also anticipated to benefit from this trade deal. Furthermore, industrial and engineering products, including steel and chemicals, may gain better access to markets, although experts indicate that certain commodities like steel, aluminium, and copper will continue to incur duties of around 50%.
Moreover, some automotive components may still face considerable tariffs despite the new trade arrangement, analysts noted.
This trade agreement materialized after a conversation between Prime Minister Narendra Modi and US President Donald Trump, resulting in a reduction of US tariffs on Indian exports to 18% and the easing of Indian trade restrictions on US goods.
Reportedly, the agreement also included India's pledge to reduce its intake of Russian oil while increasing imports from the United States and possibly Venezuela.
PM Modi expressed his gratitude on X, stating, “It was wonderful to converse with my dear friend President Trump today. I am thrilled that Made in India products will now enjoy a reduced tariff of 18%. A big thank you to President Trump on behalf of the 1.4 billion people of India for this fantastic announcement.”
