Humayun Kabir Seeks Calcutta HC Investigation into Trinamool Video Controversy
Synopsis
Key Takeaways
Kolkata, April 17 (NationPress) Former Trinamool Congress member Humayun Kabir, who has recently established his own political party and is participating in the upcoming assembly elections, has filed a petition with the Calcutta High Court seeking an investigation into a video clip released by the Trinamool Congress.
In this video clip, Kabir is depicted discussing a supposed deal worth Rs 1,000 crore with the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) aimed at splitting minority votes in favor of the BJP for the forthcoming West Bengal assembly elections.
Kabir has labeled the video as fake and claims it has been generated using artificial intelligence (AI), accusing the Trinamool Congress of intentionally releasing it to tarnish his reputation ahead of the elections.
His petition, which was lodged with the Calcutta High Court’s single-judge bench of Justice Saugata Bhattacharya, requests the court to initiate a thorough investigation into the creators and distributors of the video and their motives.
The petition has been accepted and is anticipated to be heard on April 22.
Post-filing the petition, Kabir told the media, “We will ensure that all those involved in this conspiracy face justice and understand the legal ramifications of this orchestrated political ploy. Our legal team has already begun the necessary steps in this matter, and we will take action against everyone connected to this.”
Kabir's reputation has suffered significantly following the video's release, with the All India Majlis-e-Ittehadul Muslimeen (AIMIM), led by Asaduddin Owaisi, announcing its withdrawal from the alliance previously formed with Kabir and his party for the upcoming two-phase assembly elections in West Bengal later this month.
The BJP has also refuted the Trinamool Congress's claims of having a covert understanding with Kabir. A BJP representative stated that the party would never engage with an individual like Kabir, who has expressed intentions to reconstruct a Babri Mosque in Beldanga, located in the minority-dominant Murshidabad district of West Bengal, mirroring the original structure from Ayodhya, Uttar Pradesh, which was demolished on December 6, 1992.
