Synopsis
Key Takeaways
On January 13, devotees are flocking to the Gangasagar Mela, immersing themselves in the divine waters at the sacred meeting point of the River Ganga and the Bay of Bengal, while paying homage to the Sun God as they prepare for Makar Sankranti.
This revered location, known as Gangasagar, is one of the most significant pilgrimage destinations in Hinduism.
The annual religious fair coincides with Makar Sankranti and takes place at Kapil Muni's ashram in West Bengal.
The Gangasagar Mela is considered the second-largest Hindu religious event after the Kumbh Mela, attracting devotees from all over the country who make the pilgrimage to take a sacred bath.
The atmosphere at the mela is charged with spiritual energy, with attendees from diverse regions joining together to chant devotional hymns.
Devotee Kurma Chaitanya Das expressed his joy and excitement about attending this year’s event.
He shared with IANS, “Chanting the holy names purifies our consciousness, bringing us happiness and connection with Krishna. The holy names of Krishna and Krishna Himself are inseparable. Just as sunlight can cleanse a dirty place, our consciousness too can be purified through the association with Krishna by chanting His holy names.”
The district administration of South 24 Parganas has made extensive preparations to ensure the health and safety of pilgrims during the fair.
Another devotee, Acharya Manoj Panday, expressed appreciation for the arrangements made for the holy gathering.
Panday told IANS, “On this sacred occasion at Kapil Muni Ashram, we extend a warm welcome to all devotees arriving from various states. This marks the third year of the grand Ganga Aarti being performed here.”
Pilgrims were also seen at Kapil Muni's Temple, praying and seeking blessings.
Millions from around the world visit the Gangasagar Mela during the chilly hours of Makar Sankranti, believing that a holy dip here can lead to moksha.
It is believed that bathing in these sacred waters absolves sins and alleviates sorrows. Devotees chant the hymn, ‘Sab Tirth Bar Bar Ganga Sagar Ekbar’ as they arrive.
Gangasagar represents more than just a pilgrimage site; it embodies an extraordinary fusion of emotion, culture, faith, and belief, symbolizing a vibrant celebration of life and spiritual devotion.
