Visakhapatnam, April 2 (NationPress) A mother lost her life, and her daughter sustained injuries following an assault by a young man infatuated with her in Andhra Pradesh's Visakhapatnam on Wednesday, according to the police.
The disturbing event took place in Swayamkrushi Nagar, within the jurisdiction of the Madhurawada Police Station.
Visakhapatnam Police Commissioner Shankhabrata Bagchi informed the press that D. Naveen, aged 26, attacked both the woman and her daughter at their residence using a knife.
Lakshmi, 43, succumbed to her injuries at the scene, while her daughter, Nakka Deepika, 20, was injured and subsequently hospitalized.
The Police Commissioner revealed that Naveen had harbored feelings for Deepika for the past six years. He sought to marry her, but her father requested a one-year waiting period due to his disapproval of Naveen’s behavior. Seemingly enraged by this, Naveen visited Deepika’s home on Wednesday and attacked her and her mother with a knife.
After the attack, the accused fled the scene. The police chief stated that a search was initiated, leading to his capture in Srikakulam district. He is currently being transported back to Visakhapatnam for court proceedings.
The Police Commissioner confirmed that Deepika's condition remains stable. Following her graduation, she had been residing at home.
Chief Minister N. Chandrababu Naidu expressed his shock regarding the situation, instructing officials to provide the best medical care for the injured and urging the police to take strict action against the perpetrator.
Home Minister V. Anitha also condemned the incident, contacting Police Commissioner Bagchi to inquire about the injured girl’s condition.
Anitha insisted that the culprit should face the most severe punishment possible and called for the best treatment for the injured.
This incident adds to a troubling trend of crimes against women in the state, with the opposition YSR Congress Party holding the TDP-led coalition government accountable for its failure to adequately address increasing incidents of rape and murder of women.
