Chandigarh, April 19 (NationPress) In a bid to restore Nangal's former glory and enhance the living standards of its inhabitants, Punjab Education Minister Harjot Singh Bains met with Union Power Minister Manohar Lal Khattar on Saturday, urging for the revitalization of the city surrounding the renowned Bhakra Nangal Dam.

Bains sought the personal involvement of the Union Minister, proposing a variety of projects such as a thorough redevelopment of the township, the establishment of a riverfront at Nangal Lake, a picturesque railway line to attract tourists, and the completion of the Bhakra Nangal Dam Museum.

Highlighting the city's historical importance, Bains pointed out its status as a prime example of India’s progress following independence. He reflected on its golden age during the 1960s and 1970s, when it was renowned as one of India’s most attractive, well-organized, and lively towns, boasting tree-lined streets, an orderly layout, and a rich cultural scene that were sources of pride for both Punjab and the country.

However, the Education Minister expressed sorrow over the town's gradual deterioration, remarking that it has sadly become a mere echo of its once magnificent past. He proposed a detailed redevelopment plan, noting that Nangal is lacking even the most basic urban facilities. He highlighted the absence of cinema halls, shopping centers, and recreational venues, despite the presence of ample vacant land.

Bains suggested that leasing a portion of this land in a transparent and proactive manner could revolutionize the urban landscape, creating recreational areas, shopping districts, urban parks, and job hubs. This transformation would not only improve the living standards for residents but also generate a steady income for the Bhakra Beas Management Board (BBMB).

The Minister advocated for the development of the Nangal Lake riverfront, emphasizing the breathtaking view along the river road adjacent to Sadan, which remains neglected. He proposed turning this area into a world-class riverfront, complete with a serene promenade featuring walking and cycling paths, dining options, and cultural spaces that would draw in tourists and provide leisure for locals.
