NFR's first maize freight run links Bengal's Tufanganj to Uttarakhand
Synopsis
Key Takeaways
Northeast Frontier Railway (NFR) achieved a logistics milestone on 27 May 2026 by completing the first-ever maize freight movement from Tufanganj station in West Bengal to Rudrapur City station in Uttarakhand, officials confirmed on Saturday. The consignment of 1,310.4 tonnes of maize, dispatched from the Alipurduar Division of North Bengal, generated freight revenue of approximately ₹30.21 lakh.
Key Developments
NFR's Chief Public Relations Officer Kapinjal Kishore Sharma confirmed that the Tufanganj–Rudrapur City run is the first of its kind on this corridor. The movement marks a new origin-destination pair for agricultural freight under the Alipurduar Division, which has emerged as an active maize-loading hub in May 2026.
This was not an isolated movement. On 15 May, a maize rake was loaded at Tufanganj for Bathinda on Northern Railway. A second rake followed on 21 May from Tufanganj to Khem Karan. A third rake was dispatched from Falakata station to Kharagpur on 26 May. The three movements together earned freight revenue of around ₹90.19 lakh.
Why It Matters for Agricultural Supply Chains
The Alipurduar Division's growing role in maize logistics reflects a broader push by Indian Railways to integrate agricultural corridors into its freight network. North Bengal's maize belt has historically relied on road transport for inter-state movement — a mode that is costlier and more carbon-intensive than rail. Shifting even a portion of this volume to rail reduces post-harvest logistics costs for farmers and traders.
Sharma noted that the initiative underscores railways' potential as a cost-effective and eco-friendly mode for agricultural commodities. Notably, the destinations span three different railway zones — Northern Railway (Bathinda, Khem Karan), South Eastern Railway (Kharagpur), and the North Eastern Railway network serving Rudrapur — demonstrating NFR's capacity for multi-zone freight coordination.
About Northeast Frontier Railway
Northeast Frontier Railway, headquartered at Maligaon near Guwahati, operates across the Northeastern states and covers seven districts of West Bengal and five districts of north Bihar. The Alipurduar Division, which manages freight operations in North Bengal, has been at the centre of this agricultural freight expansion.
What Comes Next
NFR has signalled its intent to expand freight operations further, with a focus on facilitating logistics solutions for farmers, traders, and business communities. Officials said such initiatives are expected to encourage greater rail adoption for agricultural commodities, contributing to regional economic development. Further rake movements from the Alipurduar Division are anticipated as the maize harvest season progresses.
