New Delhi, Nov 3 (NationPress) In an effort to enhance scrutiny on Tatkal ticketing and guarantee fair access for authentic passengers, the Railway Ministry has initiated the implementation of a one-time password (OTP) verification system for those booking Tatkal tickets at physical reservation counters.
Reports indicate that this system, which was first piloted on November 17, started with a limited selection of trains but has now been broadened to encompass 52 trains. The rollout will continue to all remaining trains shortly, as per government sources.
With the new protocol, travellers reserving a Tatkal ticket at a counter will receive an OTP sent to the mobile number they provide on the reservation form.
The ministry stated that tickets will only be issued after successful OTP verification, introducing an additional layer of security to deter manipulation during the high-demand Tatkal booking period.
This initiative targets to reduce malpractices by agents and touts who take advantage of the limited Tatkal quota.
Officials assert that this measure is designed to ensure that last-minute tickets are accessible to genuine travellers rather than intermediaries, as every counter transaction will be linked to a mobile OTP.
This latest action is part of a comprehensive overhaul of the ticketing framework initiated this year. In July, the Railways launched an Aadhaar-based OTP verification for online Tatkal bookings to prevent automated or fraudulent transactions.
Subsequently, only users verified through Aadhaar were permitted to book reserved general tickets during the first 15 minutes when the booking window opened on the IRCTC website or mobile app starting October 1.
