Actor Avinash Wadhawan, once regarded as one of the more promising faces of early-1990s Hindi cinema, has opened up about a string of career-defining roles he turned down or lost — including parts that eventually launched the careers of Ajay Devgn and Shah Rukh Khan. In a candid interview, Wadhawan attributed the missed opportunities to a combination of circumstance, personal turmoil, and, as he put it, destiny.

The Roles That Got Away

Wadhawan confirmed that he was offered the lead role in Ajay Devgn's debut film 'Phool Aur Kaante' as well as Shah Rukh Khan's breakout role in 'Deewana' — both now regarded as landmark films of that era. He declined both, citing unspecified reasons at the time.

The list of near-misses did not end there. After working with filmmaker Mahesh Bhatt on 'Junoon', Wadhawan was set to star in Bhatt's next production 'Sir', opposite Pooja Bhatt — only to lose the project due to what he described as his secretary's manipulation. He was also finalised for Akshaye Khanna's role in the war epic 'Border', but was dropped at the last moment without explanation.

Perhaps the most poignant missed opportunity involved legendary director Yash Chopra, who personally called Wadhawan to his office to discuss casting him as one of the two male leads in 'Yeh Dillagi'. Wadhawan could not make it on that particular day, and by the time he arrived, the moment had passed.

What Wadhawan Said

'There were many reasons and also destiny. I was offered Ajay Devgn's Phool Aur Kaante, Shah Rukh Khan's role in Deewana… both these roles I refused due to many reasons. After Mahesh Bhatt's Junoon, I was offered his Sir, again opposite Pooja Bhatt, but lost out due to my secretary's manipulation. I was finalised for Akshaye Khaana's role in Border but I was unceremoniously dropped at the last moment,' he said.

On the Yash Chopra episode, he recalled: 'Yash Chopra ji wanted to cast me as one of the two heroes in Yeh Dillagi and personally called me to his office but somehow I couldn't reach on that particular day. It was too late by the time I went there.'

Personal Setbacks Behind the Career Decline

Wadhawan was candid about the deeper reasons his career did not reach the heights many had predicted. He pointed squarely at his personal life — specifically an unsettled marriage — as the primary force that derailed his ambition.

'The main hurdles in my career were my own personal setbacks, my unsettled marriage which affected me emotionally to such an extent that I lost ambition… didn't want to be in Mumbai and I started taking reckless and absurd decisions. And, I blame myself for all this fiasco. These are the things in your life which you can't explain but you can feel,' he said.

A Career That Still Had Its Moments

Despite the missed turns, Wadhawan noted that he delivered several commercially successful films under directors including Mahesh Bhatt, Partho Ghosh, K.C. Bokadia, Lawrence D'Souza, Anil Ganguly, and Ashok Gaikwad. He was also paired opposite leading actresses of the era — among them Pooja Bhatt, Ayesha Jhulka, Bhagyashree, Divya Bharti, Karishma Kapoor, Nagma, and Madhoo.

His notable film credits include 'Aayee Milan Ki Raat', 'Meera Ka Mohan', 'Junoon', 'Geet', 'Balmaa', 'Dil Ki Baazi', and 'Paapi Gudia'. On television, he is best remembered for playing Indrajeet Rajvansh in 'Sapna Babul Ka... Bidaai' and for his appearance in 'Balika Vadhu', among other popular shows.
