Iran and US Talks Extended: A New Chance for Diplomacy
Synopsis
Key Takeaways
Tehran, April 12 (NationPress) In a significant development, the diplomatic discussions between the Iranian and American delegations have been extended for an additional day following a proposal from Pakistan and mutual agreement from both parties, as reported by the semi-official Tasnim news agency early on Sunday.
The report indicates that the United States’ unreasonable demands and Iran's firm stance on protecting its national interests led to Pakistan's suggestion to continue negotiations on Sunday, which both sides accepted, according to Xinhua news agency.
This extension comes at the conclusion of the most recent round of talks mediated by Pakistan, which wrapped up early Sunday in Islamabad, following an exchange of texts between the two delegations, as mentioned by Tasnim.
The discussions commenced at 1 p.m. local time (0800 GMT) on Saturday and lasted for over 14 hours, according to the report.
Tasnim previously highlighted that significant disagreements persist between the two parties, stating that “the ball is now in the US court” to abandon its typical excessive demands in favor of a more pragmatic approach.
Sources close to the situation revealed that despite some initial progress made by the expert teams, serious differences remain regarding the Strait of Hormuz and other critical issues, with no substantial advancements due to the US's “excessive demands.”
The report also emphasized that certain Western media outlets are overstating the talks' “positive atmosphere” as a means to influence global energy prices.
Regarding the ongoing negotiations, Tasnim stated: “In light of the US's excessive demands, this round might represent the final opportunity for the Iranian delegation to work towards a joint agreement with the Americans.”
Delegations from both Iran and the United States are currently in Islamabad to discuss measures aimed at reducing tensions in the Middle East, following a ceasefire that was established earlier this week after over a month of conflict.
