South Korea and US Prepare for Annual Military Exercise Amid Wartime Control Transition
Synopsis
Key Takeaways
Seoul, Feb 25 (NationPress) South Korea and the United States are set to conduct their annual joint spring military exercise next month, aimed at reinforcing their joint defense capabilities as they prepare for the transfer of wartime operational control (OPCON) from Washington to Seoul, announced the allied military forces on Wednesday.
The Freedom Shield (FS) exercise is planned for March 9-19, which will include a field training event known as "Warrior Shield", as reported by the South's Joint Chiefs of Staff (JCS) along with the US Forces Korea (USFK).
The military leaders emphasized that these upcoming drills will enhance the alliance's readiness and operational capabilities through comprehensive, joint, all-domain operations.
"This exercise will provide a platform to support ongoing preparations for a condition-based transition of wartime operational control, in line with our alliance agreements," they stated in a joint announcement.
South Korea aims to achieve a "conditions-based" transfer of wartime command from the US within President Lee Jae Myung's five-year term, which concludes in 2030.
To facilitate a prompt handover, the allies have committed to verifying Seoul's Full Operational Capability (FOC) by the end of this year, marking the second phase of a three-part program designed to evaluate its ability to lead combined forces.
Additionally, it appears that some field training activities during the FS exercise may be reduced compared to the previous year, according to insider sources.
Reports suggest that Washington has expressed concern regarding Seoul's proposal to minimize field training, particularly as the Lee administration seeks to improve relations with North Korea.
South Korea is working towards creating favorable conditions for the potential resumption of dialogue between the US and North Korea, especially ahead of the anticipated summit talks involving US President Donald Trump and Chinese President Xi Jinping in April, as reported by Yonhap news agency.
North Korea has persistently criticized the combined military exercises between Seoul and Washington, viewing them as rehearsals for invasion, while the allies assert that these drills are defensive.
The South Korean and US forces conduct significant combined exercises annually, featuring computer-simulated command post drills, including the FS exercise in March and the Ulchi Freedom Shield (UFS) exercise in August.
