New Delhi, Feb 6 (NationPress) Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Thursday took credit for abolishing the licence-permit raj that was promoted by the Congress, emphasizing his government's decisive actions and policies that have propelled a digital revolution in India.
While responding to the Motion of Thanks on the President's Address in the Rajya Sabha, PM Modi remarked that if the 'Digital India' initiative hadn't been initiated a decade ago, the spread of 5G technology in the country would not have been as extensive as it is today.
Referring to the goal of a Viksit Bharat (Developed India) as a mission, PM Modi stated: “If the nation is on the trajectory of development, we must all rise above trivial politics.”
He noted the necessity for comprehensive discussions and reflections on the President's Address, expressing hope that it would facilitate progress for the nation.
PM Modi criticized the licence raj under previous administrations, recalling how one needed licenses to import computers, acquire cement for construction, and purchase sugar for weddings.
“I mention these facts so that today's youth understand the struggles their parents endured under the Congress's licence raj,” he asserted.
He pointed out that a Congress MP's father had to wait 15 years for permission to buy a car with his own funds.
PM Modi also highlighted a Congress leader’s claim that the licence raj was ineffective without bribery.
“I am uncertain which panja (hand) was involved in siphoning off bribe money through 'haat ki safai' (trickery) and questioned where that money ended up,” he commented.
The financial mismanagement by the Congress family, he stated, tarnished India's reputation globally.
Stressing that India’s historical ethos champions free trade, PM Modi argued that the licence raj was not a natural state for the nation, highlighting the economy's growth under his leadership, now attracting global attention.
“Now that we have liberated ourselves from the Congress's punja (hand), the country is soaring,” he declared.
Enumerating his government's economic accomplishments over the last decade, PM Modi pointed out a tenfold increase in defence exports, the PLI scheme, reforms in FDI, and India’s position as the second-largest producer of mobile phones and steel.
He also addressed the vaccine production during the Covid era, the growth of Ayush, herbal products, and Khadi exports, noting that the MSME sector has been a crucial driver of his government's economic success, resulting in millions of jobs.
