Should Delhi Minister Kapil Mishra Resign Over Controversial Video?
Synopsis
Key Takeaways
New Delhi, Jan 8 (NationPress) Four suspended Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) lawmakers have addressed a letter to Delhi Assembly Speaker Vijender Gupta, demanding the resignation of Delhi Minister Kapil Mishra. They allege that Mishra circulated a misleading video featuring former Delhi Chief Minister Atishi, which they claim is politically motivated.
The suspended MLAs—Sanjeev Jha, Som Dutt, Kuldeep Kumar, and Jarnail Singh—were removed from the Assembly for disrupting proceedings. Post-suspension, they protested outside the Assembly, holding banners that read “Kapil Mishra Ishtifa Do”.
In a statement to reporters, AAP MLA Sanjeev Jha confirmed their formal appeal to the Speaker for action against Mishra.
“In our letter, we have demanded Mishra’s resignation and the cancellation of his membership due to the video. We also want the individual who shared it on social media to be suspended for six months. Lastly, we request the release of the full video to clear the air,” Jha said.
He further commented, “During the LG's address, Atishi raised the issue of pollution being a serious concern. Instead of addressing pollution, the Assembly was embroiled in protests about stray dogs. Atishi sought a serious discussion on pressing issues.”
Jha criticized the BJP, asserting, “Their leaders are so unscrupulous that they dragged Guru Sahib's name into this. The creation of a fake video misusing Guru Sahib’s name is unacceptable. We demand an apology from BJP leaders.”
Another AAP MLA, Mukesh Alhawat, condemned the alleged exploitation of religious sentiments for political gain. “Talking about Sikh Gurus is commendable, but using their names for false narratives is erroneous. There must be unbiased action against this,” he stated.
Jarnail Singh, another AAP MLA, remarked, “The video being circulated is misleading. We demand strict action against those BJP leaders who edited and distributed it.”
Previously, Speaker Vijender Gupta accused AAP's Leader of Opposition Atishi of spreading misinformation regarding the suspension. Gupta stated that Atishi misled the media by asserting that the MLAs were expelled solely for wearing masks.
“This claim is factually incorrect and misrepresents the House's proceedings,” Gupta clarified, adding that the decision to suspend the MLAs was to uphold the dignity of the Assembly and was in accordance with its rules.
Gupta noted that the matter has been referred to the Committee of Privileges for further examination due to conduct that could be seen as contempt of the House.
In defense of Atishi, the AAP condemned BJP allegations that she made derogatory remarks about Sikh Guru Tegh Bahadur. The party asserted that the BJP had misrepresented Atishi’s words and circulated a doctored video to stir controversy.
Atishi claimed on social media that the BJP was spreading falsehoods through an edited video, highlighting that misleading subtitles were added. “Lie No. 1: The video was from after the discussion on Guru Tegh Bahadur Ji’s martyrdom, when the discussion on the Lieutenant Governor’s address had begun,” she stated.
“Lie No. 2: I was addressing the BJP's avoidance of pollution discussions and their protests concerning stray dogs. I insisted that a discussion should be allowed,” Atishi emphasized.
She also accused the BJP of harboring animosity towards the Sikh community and dragging Guru's name into political strife.
Atishi highlighted her personal connection to Sikhism, noting that her family has a long tradition of adopting Sikhism to protect society.
