Gurugram, April 18 (NationPress) The Gurugram police's Special Investigation Team (SIT), established just a day prior, successfully apprehended the suspect in the air hostess ICU sexual assault case on Friday. This came after a thorough analysis of footage from over 800 CCTV cameras located within and outside the private hospital, according to police reports.
The accused, identified as Deepak, aged 25 and originally from Muzaffarpur, Bihar, had been employed as a treatment machine technician in the hospital's ICU for the last five months. He is set to be presented in court on Saturday, where police will request custody for additional inquiries, stated a police spokesperson.
A source involved in the investigation revealed that the accused, who was detained in the Sadar Police Station area on Friday, has admitted to his wrongdoing.
During the investigation, eight police teams meticulously reviewed footage from the hospital's 800 CCTV cameras and interrogated around 50 hospital staff, including doctors, regarding the incident. Given the severity of the allegations, police teams explored every possible angle, gathering extensive information that ultimately led to the successful identification of the perpetrator, said DCP, Headquarters, Arpit Jain.
On Thursday, Gurugram Police Commissioner Vikas Kumar Arora had initiated the formation of the SIT to identify and arrest the perpetrator. The SIT, led by DCP Jain, comprised eight distinct police teams assigned with specific instructions to gather evidence and information pertaining to the case.
The teams, which included ACP, Sadar, Yashwant, ACP, CAW, Kavita, Sadar SHO, Inspector Sunil Kumar, SHO, Women Police West, Inspector Geeta, CIA in charge Sector 40, Inspector Amit Kumar, and the investigation officer, Assistant-Sub-Inspector Sonika, collected various insights regarding the situation.
The 46-year-old air hostess alleged in her complaint that she was sexually assaulted while on ventilator support in the ICU of a well-known private hospital in Gurugram on April 6. The incident was brought to light on April 13 when she confided in her husband about the sexual assault, prompting him to alert the police and file a formal complaint.
According to her statement, the air hostess had traveled to Gurugram for training on behalf of her airline and was residing in a hotel. During her stay, her health worsened due to a drowning incident, necessitating her admission to a private hospital. Subsequently, on April 5, her husband transferred her to a different hospital in Gurugram for further treatment. She was discharged on April 13.
"While receiving treatment on April 6, she was on a ventilator when some hospital staff sexually assaulted her. At that moment, she was unable to speak and was terrified. She was also unconscious during the assault, with two nurses present nearby," the victim stated in her complaint.
After her discharge, she informed her husband about the assault, who then notified the police and submitted a complaint to the legal advisor.
In response to the victim's complaint, a case was registered at the Sadar Police Station in Gurugram. A police team was dispatched to the hospital to review the duty roster and examine the CCTV footage to identify the suspect, police reported.
The hospital has since suspended the accused employee.
"We have been made aware that the police have identified a suspect who is now in custody regarding the ongoing investigation into the allegations of sexual assault on a patient. Based on the information provided by the police, we have suspended the employee in question. We will continue to support the police as we await the investigation's final outcome," stated the hospital's medical superintendent.
