Syed Akbaruddin: India's Independence from US Influence
Synopsis
Key Takeaways
New Delhi, April 3 (NationPress) Syed Akbaruddin, India’s former Permanent Representative to the United Nations, expressed on Friday that the assertion that India mimics the United States is unjust and misrepresents the truth.
During a discussion with young Indian entrepreneur and podcaster Raj Shamani on his YouTube channel, Akbaruddin stated, "It’s not accurate to say that we follow (the US). Take the Peace Board as an example. (US President Donald) Trump established a Peace Board; Pakistan has one too. However, we have opted not to participate. We recognize that this is not a genuine international body. The US opposes our negotiations with Iran for our shipping needs, yet it has not obstructed us. We have been transparent about our approach, addressing issues one at a time. If successful, we will pursue further negotiations.”
He added, "The US prefers that nations deploy ships, such as minesweepers, but it doesn’t even acknowledge our involvement because it understands that India does not take sides in conflicts. There are numerous instances where we remain unaligned. Regarding the Ukraine conflict, did we side with the US? Absolutely not. The US advised us against abstaining, but we chose to abstain. Therefore, I believe there is no one in the world who genuinely thinks India follows the US, not even the US itself. Perhaps some individuals here wish to make a point, but in reality, that’s not the case,” the former IFS officer remarked.
The Opposition in India frequently criticizes the government, alleging that it operates under the influence of US President Trump. Rahul Gandhi, the Leader of the Opposition in the Lok Sabha, has made similar claims on multiple occasions, insinuating that “India’s PM is compromised.”
