Guwahati, Aug 11 (NationPress) Authorities in Assam have successfully disrupted an interstate drug trafficking operation, resulting in the apprehension of an individual, as reported by officials on Monday.
This operation took place in Cachar district after law enforcement received critical intelligence regarding the suspicious movement of narcotics.
A senior police representative stated, “Acting on our intelligence concerning drug trafficking, we intercepted a vehicle originating from Tripura and seized approximately 362 kg of cannabis from the accused.”
A man identified as Pradip Kar, hailing from the neighboring state of Tripura, has been taken into custody on drug trafficking charges. Authorities estimate that the street value of the confiscated drugs exceeds Rs. 2 crore 50 lakhs.
A formal case has been filed, and investigations are actively ongoing. The interstate drug trade poses a significant challenge for law enforcement, with southern Assam being a key route for narcotics transported from adjacent states to various regions across the country.
Recently, Himanta Biswa Sarma expressed that the battle against drug trafficking is extensive, noting that smugglers are increasingly utilizing advanced tactics, including drones, for delivering narcotics.
The Chief Minister emphasized that traffickers are evolving their delivery methods, which poses a serious threat. “In Assam and Meghalaya, we primarily face challenges from drug carriers, and this is an ongoing struggle. Nevertheless, traffickers are adopting diverse strategies for their deliveries, often employing drones as conduits for narcotics,” he mentioned.
In a press briefing, he stated: “The drug problem is enormous, and each state government is committed to thwarting drug trafficking. Assam is vigorously confronting the narcotics network, maintaining a zero-tolerance policy against drugs. I believe that relentless operations are essential for eradicating this societal issue.”
The Chief Minister further revealed that the masterminds behind the drug network often operate from outside India.
“The kingpins of this narcotics syndicate are based abroad, coordinating through their local agents. They employ every conceivable tactic to elude capture by law enforcement. For instance, if ten individuals travel from Guwahati to Delhi, each carrying half a gram of heroin in their pockets, it becomes exceedingly challenging to apprehend them. However, our security teams are continuously striving to stay one step ahead of these traffickers, and this is how Assam Police successfully dismantle drug networks,” CM Sarma concluded.
