Did Police Uncover Sexual Assault in Techie Murder Case in Bengaluru?
Synopsis
Key Takeaways
Bengaluru, Jan 12 (NationPress) The tragic murder of a woman software engineer has taken a shocking turn, as authorities now suspect that the accused may have sexually assaulted the 34-year-old tech professional before taking her life, according to police reports released on Monday.
This incident occurred within the jurisdiction of the Ramamurthynagar police station on January 3.
Initial investigations indicated that the suspect, identified as 18-year-old Karnal Kunal K, a second-year pre-university student, smothered the victim to death after she resisted his advances and subsequently set her apartment ablaze to hide his crime. The authorities managed to apprehend him on Sunday.
Law enforcement is now strongly suspecting that the accused committed sexual assault against the techie prior to her murder. Relevant sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, including 64(2) (rape), 103 (murder), and 238 (causing disappearance of evidence of offence), have been applied to the case. This unsettling development has heightened concerns regarding the safety of women in the city.
As per police accounts, on January 3 at approximately 9 p.m., the accused allegedly broke into the residence of techie Sharmila Kushalappa, originally from Mangaluru, and attempted to rape her while she was home alone. When she fought back, the accused reportedly smothered her.
Following the murder, he allegedly ignited a fire in the apartment and fled with her mobile device to destroy evidence. Initially, investigators had suspected that the techie died due to an electrical fire, but the post-mortem examination and further inquiries confirmed it was a homicide.
The suspect, who hails from Madikeri district, resided in the same building as the victim, just next door. Marks of struggle and injuries on her hands had previously raised red flags for police. The autopsy revealed that the injuries occurred before her death and confirmed that she was smothered.
The accused has reportedly confessed to holding her nose and mouth shut until she lost consciousness after she rejected his advances. He then removed her clothes, placed them on the bed, ignited them, and escaped through a sliding window.
Police are currently waiting for the Forensic Science Laboratory (FSL) report. The investigation is ongoing, and the suspect is now in judicial custody.
