Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) legislator Vinay Bihari triggered a stormy session in the Bihar Legislative Assembly on Wednesday, 22 July, alleging that his vehicle was attacked by anti-social elements during a students' protest as he travelled to attend the ongoing monsoon session in Patna. The MLA claimed every window of his car was smashed near Dak Bungalow Chowk, and demanded stringent action against those responsible.

What Vinay Bihari Alleged

Raising the matter on the floor of the House, Vinay Bihari described the incident as a direct threat to the safety of elected representatives. In a striking departure from conventional legislative address, he placed his account before the Assembly through a poem, saying: 'With sickles and weapons in hand, they were ready to take my life today... It was my good fortune. Thanks to the presence of mind of my bodyguards, I escaped unharmed, although every window of my vehicle was shattered. I survived today because I am an MLA.'

He further appealed to opposition members not to publicly announce the movement of legislators during protests, alleging that such disclosures encourage attacks on public representatives. 'I have survived today by sheer luck. I thank the House for allowing me to place this matter before everyone,' he added.

Uproar on the Assembly Floor

The allegations immediately set off sharp exchanges between the treasury and opposition benches, with members from both sides trading accusations. The proceedings were repeatedly interrupted by noisy scenes and raised voices. Assembly Speaker Prem Kumar intervened to restore order, urging members to maintain decorum. He acknowledged the gravity of the allegations and assured the House that appropriate action would be taken in accordance with the law against those found responsible. Despite the intervention, the uproar continued for some time as both sides held firm on their positions.

BJP Leader's Contested Remarks on Protesters

Outside the Assembly, BJP leader Hari Bhushan Thakur Bachaul made a pointed — and unsubstantiated — claim about the demonstrators. 'These are not students. These are people who have come from Bangladesh and Nepal. Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan will not resign,' he said. No publicly available evidence has been presented to support the assertion that protesters were foreign nationals, and no official confirmation from authorities has backed the claim.

Student organisations, meanwhile, maintained that the protest was organised around domestic grievances, including alleged examination paper leaks and broader education-related demands.
