Kolkata, Feb 26 (NationPress) The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) is placing significant emphasis on circumstantial evidence to strengthen their case regarding the tampering and alteration of evidence in the tragic R.G. Kar rape and murder incident. The supplementary charge sheet is anticipated to be submitted at a special court in Kolkata shortly.

On February 24, the CBI's legal representative informed the special court that their inquiry is ongoing and that the supplementary charge sheet will be presented soon. Notably, this special court had recently imposed a life sentence on Sanjay Roy, the sole convict in the rape and murder case.

According to sources familiar with the developments, a key asset in the collection of circumstantial evidence is the mobile SIM card belonging to the former SHO of Tala Police Station, Abhijit Mondal.

This is why, as noted by a CBI insider, the agency's lawyer opposed Mondal's request on February 24 to reclaim his mobile SIM.

The insider also confirmed that investigators have gathered substantial circumstantial evidence that points to attempts made to initially misrepresent the rape and murder incident as a suicide and subsequently destroy the evidence related to the case.

Such findings, derived from circumstantial evidence, will serve as the foundation for the supplementary charge sheet to be filed soon in the special court, according to the CBI insider.

Circumstantial evidence refers to indirect evidence that supports a claim through logical inferences and is commonly employed in both criminal and civil investigations.

Moreover, sources indicated that elements from the status report previously submitted to the Supreme Court by the CBI will also be incorporated into the upcoming supplementary charge sheet.

It is expected that the CBI will submit the charge sheet in Kolkata's special court prior to the next Supreme Court hearing scheduled for March 17.

For context, the CBI had also apprehended both Mondal and the former principal of R.G. Kar, Sandip Ghosh, on allegations of tampering with and altering evidence.

However, both were granted “default bail” by the special court after the CBI failed to file a supplementary charge sheet against them within 90 days of their arrests.

Mondal is currently released on bail, whereas Ghosh remains in judicial custody due to a pending investigation by the CBI concerning multi-crore financial discrepancies at R.G. Kar Medical College & Hospital.
