Is Congress Revamping Its Organization After Recent Political Challenges?
Synopsis
Key Takeaways
New Delhi, Jan 26 (NationPress) The Congress party has instructed its state leaders to expedite the establishment of committees at various levels, from districts down to booths, as part of a concerted effort to revitalize the organization following recent political challenges.
In a social media update, party General Secretary (Organisation) K. C. Venugopal stated, “Today, I convened a thorough and fruitful meeting at Indira Bhawan with General Secretaries, In-charges, and PCC Presidents from states where DCC Presidents have been appointed under the Sangathan Srijan Abhiyan.
Last week, Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge approved the deployment of party observers in six states to aid in the selection of District Congress Committee (DCC) presidents under the Sangathan Srijan Abhiyan.
Each observer has been assigned to a district, along with state committee observers, to ensure the completion of the organizational structure.
“Currently, we have successfully appointed DCC Presidents under SSA in 14 states, totaling 525 new DCC Presidents. The process has also been officially initiated in six additional states, signaling the next phase of strengthening our organization,” Venugopal, who also serves as the Congress Lok Sabha MP from Alappuzha in Kerala, mentioned.
The party had previously announced its intention to overhaul its structure with a focus on decentralizing decision-making to overcome its recent electoral losses.
This initiative began last year in states like Gujarat and Madhya Pradesh, where Rahul Gandhi hinted at sidelining ineffective leaders and promoting the most engaged, youthful, and dedicated members within the party.
Formally launched as the Sangathan Srijan Karyakram in 2025, this initiative was unveiled during an extended Congress Working Committee (CWC) meeting held in December 2024 in Belagavi, Karnataka.
It emerged as part of a broader strategy to reconstruct the party's organization from the grassroots level to the highest leadership.
With this aim, the party announced the appointment of AICC observers in Bihar, Uttar Pradesh, Goa, Nagaland, Manipur, and Meghalaya this month as part of the campaign.
Each observer was assigned to a district alongside Pradesh Congress Committee observers to finalize the process.
According to Venugopal, Pradesh Committees are tasked with completing the formation of district-level bodies within 15 days, block-level bodies in 30 days, and mandal, gram panchayat, and booth-level committees within 60 days.
He emphasized the importance of ensuring adequate representation of all communities, particularly Scheduled Castes (SC), Scheduled Tribes (ST), Other Backward Classes (OBC), and minorities.
“They have also been directed to conduct training programs at district and block levels,” he noted.
Reiterating the party's commitment to rejuvenation, Venugopal concluded, “The Sangathan Srijan Abhiyan is essential for constructing a robust, active, and community-focused organization from the foundation up.”
