Guwahati, Feb 20 (NationPress) The Deputy Leader of the Opposition (LoP) in the Lok Sabha, Gaurav Gogoi, condemned the BJP administration following the assault on Congress MP Rakibul Hussain by miscreants in Nagaon district on Thursday.

“In Assam, a Congress Lok Sabha MP is attacked by thugs in broad daylight in a bustling marketplace. The goons even confronted police security officers and attempted to seize their weapons. All of this is captured on camera. Yet, Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma refuses to act swiftly to arrest the perpetrators,” stated the Deputy LoP.

He further emphasized that the Chief Minister must consider his constitutional obligations towards the Assam Police and the innocent civilians present in the marketplace.

“If the thugs had obtained the machine gun, a grave tragedy could have unfolded. The Chief Minister's lack of action will only encourage criminals, robbers, smugglers, and murder suspects. Our democracy is at risk, and the people of Assam desire liberation from this gunda raj culture,” he added.

Hussain, representing the Dhubri Lok Sabha constituency, was participating in a public event in Nagaon district when the attack occurred.

The Congress MP was compelled to flee while donning a helmet to evade his attackers. The motive behind the assault remains unclear. The Congress has criticized the BJP-led government regarding the deteriorating law and order situation in the region.

Previously, while addressing the alleged ties between Congress MP Gaurav Gogoi and Pakistan, Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma stated that once the full investigation by the Assam Police is disclosed, it will be “fatal” for the Congress party and the ramifications will be “significant.”

Sarma claimed: “Pak national Ali Sheikh, against whom the state government has lodged an FIR for comments that disrupt internal harmony in India—Assam Police's preliminary investigation revealed that Sheikh traveled to India no less than 18 times between 2010 and 2018.”

He also asserted that the SIT investigating the matter discovered Sheikh's multiple entries into India.

“In the comprehensive investigation, we will uncover who facilitated his entry into India and who met with Sheikh. This information will be revealed in the coming days. The preliminary findings I have received could be very detrimental to the Congress party. It will be challenging for them to manage,” the Chief Minister added.

“Yesterday, I advised Pradyut Bordoloi not to criticize me regarding political matters. This issue is going to be substantial. I reiterate that the initial investigation has yielded startling outcomes. I stand in the Assembly as a responsible individual stating that the impact will be significant in Assam Politics.
