Chandigarh, April 10 (NationPress) Haryana's Chief Minister Nayab Singh Saini urged on Friday that the development of the Gurugram water supply channel should be expedited to secure drinking water access for the city.
The Chief Minister chaired a meeting of the Standing Finance Committee focused on the renovation of the water supply system in Gurugram.
He explained that this channel, which will extend from the Kakroi head in Sonipat to the Basai water works, is designed to deliver 686 cusecs of water to Gurugram, adequately catering to the needs of its population until 2050. The total investment for this approximately 70 km project is anticipated to be around Rs 1,993 crore. The construction involves laying a fully underground pipeline, addressing the issue of water theft.
Furthermore, the Chief Minister emphasized the need to enhance the channel's capacity to 1,000 cusecs, ensuring that more residents can benefit over an extended time frame.
Officials reported that Gurugram will additionally receive 500 cusecs from the NCR canal, leading to an expected total supply of 1,500 cusecs in the near future.
Moreover, a distinct allocation of 389 cusecs of drinking water will be established for the Mewat region.
The Chief Minister directed the execution of the project with utmost transparency and adherence to high-quality standards, asserting that any negligence would not be tolerated. He described this initiative as a significant and transformative project for the community, stressing the need for global standards to ensure long-term public benefits.
The project aims to be completed within two and a half years, with the Chief Minister instructing officials to ensure ongoing oversight and aim for completion approximately three months early.
Highlighting the rapid population growth in Gurugram, which has evolved into a megacity, he declared that it is the state government's duty to guarantee uninterrupted access to clean drinking water for all citizens.
