Kochi, Jan 15 (NationPress) Known for his attention-grabbing tactics aimed at maximizing publicity, jewellery tycoon Boby Chemmanur, who has been in jail for the past six days concerning the actress harassment case, surprised everyone by informing his lawyers that he would not be leaving jail as a form of protest after receiving bail from the Kerala High Court on Tuesday.
He expressed to his legal team that he wanted to show support for numerous inmates who are unable to secure their release due to technicalities associated with their bail. Consequently, he decided to remain in custody.
By evening, when the bail documentation was finalized, a large crowd of his supporters, both men and women, gathered in anticipation of his release, only to be disheartened by the news delivered by his lawyers that he would not exit. It remains uncertain if he will choose to leave on Wednesday.
The high court had granted him bail earlier in the day after the police stated they no longer needed him in custody. Chemmanur had sought bail after being remanded to 14 days of judicial custody by a lower court on January 8. On that day, the Kerala High Court questioned the urgency of his bail request and set a hearing for Tuesday (January 14).
On Tuesday, the court reprimanded Chemmanur for his public comments, warning that such statements could adversely affect others and should be refrained from. The court also presented videos of his contentious remarks during the session.
The incident escalated when acclaimed Malayalam actress Honey Rose alleged that Chemmanur used offensive language directed at her during an incident that took place four months ago.
Rose made the situation public on social media earlier this week, detailing her choice to file a police complaint. She signaled that she might extend her allegations to Chemmanur’s close associates if deemed necessary. Her initial post, which did not specifically mention Chemmanur, triggered a wave of cyberbullying against her.
Since then, authorities have detained around two dozen individuals involved in these attacks. Chemmanur was arrested by the Kerala Police at his Wayanad resort on January 8, following Rose’s complaint. He was subsequently transported to Kochi, where he was interrogated and formally arrested by the local police.
Honey Rose, who debuted in the 2005 Malayalam film 'Boyy Friennd', rose to fame with the 2012 film Trivandrum Lodge. She remains a significant presence in the entertainment industry, frequently appearing at public events.
Chemmanur, the chairman of the Chemmanur International Group, is a prominent businessman and philanthropist. He gained attention for bringing the late football icon Diego Maradona to Kerala in 2012 and for organizing a record-breaking 812 km marathon in 2014 to promote blood donation.
Although the current allegations have cast a shadow over Chemmanur’s reputation built over decades of high-profile ventures and charitable contributions, his business continues to thrive, with new showrooms being launched in various locations.
