Motihari, April 9 (NationPress) Following Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s initiative to designate 2023 as the International Year of Millets, there has been a notable surge in interest regarding millets across India, including farmers in Bihar's Motihari district. In addition to being more nutritious, millet farming has resulted in a significant rise in farmers' income compared to prior years.
Thanks to PM Modi's advocacy for millets, farmers in Bihar and across the nation have redirected their efforts towards millet cultivation. District Agricultural Officer Manish Kumar Singh noted, "Farmers in East Champaran district have cultivated millets across roughly 1,027 hectares, growing varieties such as Sawa, Kodo, Kangni, Maize, Ragi, and Madua. The shift towards these millets has considerably enhanced farmers' earnings."
He further elaborated, "Farmers have expressed that the revenue generated from selling millets has enabled them to finance everything from their daughters’ weddings to constructing homes. This achievement is largely due to Prime Minister Modi inspiring them to adopt millet farming."
Farmer Nayak Singh, who cultivates millets, shared, "In the past, when people consumed more millets, both their health and farmers' profits improved. Over time, however, the emphasis shifted to crops like wheat and rice, leading to diminished farmer earnings. Maize is a type of millet, and PM Modi has fervently encouraged its cultivation. Growing maize allows any farmer to afford significant expenses such as a daughter's wedding or home building, which is challenging with wheat alone."
He continued, "I personally grow millets and motivate fellow farmers to join in. PM Modi is also championing this cause, and the market demand for millets is strong. Everyone is thriving under PM Modi's leadership."
Another farmer, Raju Sahu, remarked, "Millet farming has profoundly benefited farmers. Our earnings have risen compared to before. Previously, we would harvest merely one quintal of wheat from our fields, but now we reap three quintals of maize. The Prime Minister's promotion of this initiative is highly motivating. Although millet farming had waned for a period, it has revitalized thanks to PM Modi's call to action."
