PM Modi Launches Delhi–Dehradun Expressway: Travel Time Slashed to 2.5 Hours
Synopsis
Key Takeaways
New Delhi, April 14 (NationPress) In a highly anticipated event, Prime Minister Narendra Modi will officially launch the Delhi–Dehradun Expressway today, marking a significant milestone in infrastructure development aimed at drastically cutting travel time and enhancing connectivity between the national capital and the capital of Uttarakhand.
Prior to the inauguration, the Prime Minister will pay respects at the revered Dat Kali Temple. According to Shubham Goswami, son of Mahant Raman Prasad Goswami, "PM has an event scheduled for the 14th and will have a darshan lasting about 5-10 minutes; preparations are in full swing for this occasion."
This expressway, with an estimated investment of approximately Rs 12,000 crore, spans 210 kilometers starting from near Akshardham Temple to Dehradun, traversing through vital towns in Uttar Pradesh including Baghpat, Baraut, Muzaffarnagar, Shamli, and Saharanpur. Additionally, it will feature a dedicated link road to Haridwar and integrate into the larger Char Dham highway network.
A standout feature of this project is the remarkable reduction in travel time. Currently, the trip from Delhi to Dehradun takes roughly six hours by road, but the new expressway will shorten this to about 2.5 hours, facilitating a quicker and more efficient travel experience.
This enhanced road infrastructure is poised to compete with other transportation modes. The Vande Bharat Express takes around five hours, while the Shatabdi Express exceeds six hours. Even though flights take less than 70 minutes, the total travel time can reach nearly five hours when accounting for airport transfers and check-in. Thus, this expressway is set to become the fastest option for travelers.
Engineered for high-speed, uninterrupted travel, the expressway will include seven interchanges, two rail overbridges, and 10 major bridges. For passenger ease, 14 wayside amenities like rest areas, food courts, fuel stations, and restrooms will be available along the route.
Moreover, the project incorporates environmentally considerate designs, especially in the segment passing through Rajaji National Park. A 12-km elevated corridor has been constructed to minimize disruption to wildlife, featuring two substantial elephant underpasses measuring approximately 200 meters each, alongside six additional animal crossings.
Once the expressway is fully operational, it is expected to alleviate traffic congestion on existing roads, boost regional connectivity, and significantly enhance travel, tourism, and economic activities between Delhi and Uttarakhand.
