New Delhi, March 28 (NationPress) A contentious debate ignited in the Rajya Sabha on Friday after Samajwadi Party MP, Ramji Lal Suman, made provocative remarks regarding Rana Sanga during the ongoing Parliament session.
The ruling party expressed strong opposition to his statement, resulting in an uproar within the House and a temporary suspension of proceedings.
Rajya Sabha Chairman Jagdeep Dhankhar characterized Rana Sanga as a national hero and emphasized the importance of respecting public sentiments during parliamentary discussions.
“While addressing the House, we must consider public emotions. Decorum and seriousness should always guide our actions,” he remarked. He noted that while Suman’s comments were expunged from the official records, they continue to be shared on social media.
Dhankhar called on members to uphold decorum, stating, “We must commit to addressing sensitive matters responsibly and maintain the dignity of the House.”
Parliamentary Affairs Minister Kiren Rijiju challenged the Opposition, particularly the Congress party, to clarify their position on the matter.
“When a national hero is insulted, the issue extends beyond Ramji Lal Suman. Although his remarks were struck from the records, they persist on social media. Such language is unacceptable,” Rijiju demanded that Congress and its allies unequivocally condemn the statement.
In response, Leader of the Opposition Mallikarjun Kharge expressed his agreement with the Chairman’s comments. “We honor all patriots who fought for our nation,” he stated.
However, Kharge denounced the vandalism against Suman’s property, saying, “This doesn’t justify individuals taking the law into their own hands. His car and home were attacked. We categorically oppose any violence against Dalits.”
BJP MP Radha Mohan Das Agrawal accused Kharge of covering for wrongdoers and claimed he unnecessarily linked the issue to caste, further disgracing Rana Sanga.
In reply, Kharge reiterated that while he supported the Chairman’s views, disagreement over a statement should not lead to violent retaliation. “Differing opinions do not mean one resorts to arson, attacks on children, or demolishing homes. The Constitution does not allow this,” he affirmed.
Rijiju countered Kharge’s argument, declaring, “You keep bringing caste into this matter. This is not about caste or religion; it is about rejecting an objectionable statement made by a Member of Parliament.”
