Indore, June 9 (NationPress) The father of Sonam Raghuvanshi defended her vehemently on Monday, asserting her innocence and alleging that the Meghalaya Police are framing her to obscure their own failures in the investigation. Sonam, who had been unaccounted for since the discovery of her husband Raja Raghuvanshi's body in a deep gorge in Meghalaya, turned herself in early Monday morning at the Nandganj police station in Uttar Pradesh's Ghazipur district.
The Meghalaya Police have stated that she surrendered under duress and was detained for supposedly orchestrating her husband's murder by hiring contract killers. Her submission has increased the number of arrests in the case to four, with one suspect still evading capture.
However, her father, Devi Singh Raghuvanshi, has dismissed the police's narrative. He recounted, "She asked a dhaba owner for a phone. After receiving a mobile phone, she called her brother, Govind, who then alerted the police around 2 a.m. I haven't spoken to Sonam yet; only Govind has communicated with her. He informed me that Sonam was found and crying," Devi Singh told reporters.
Labeling the murder accusations as "false," he claimed that the Meghalaya Police are making "groundless assertions" to divert attention from their own mishandling of the case.
"The Meghalaya Police are fabricating claims due to their lack of inquiry. Why would she do something like this? The police are lying. I am 100 percent certain that my daughter is incapable of such actions. I know her well," he asserted.
He further urged Union Home Minister Amit Shah to mandate a CBI inquiry into the matter, stating that a thorough investigation would reveal the culpability of the entire Meghalaya Police.
Meanwhile, Meghalaya IGP Dalton P. Marak confirmed Sonam's surrender and arrest during a phone call with IANS, noting, "Sonam surrendered under duress last night, bringing the total number of arrests in the case to four, with one accused still at large. Sonam will be returned to Meghalaya for judicial proceedings."
Uttar Pradesh ADG (Law and Order) Amitabh Yash also verified that Sonam was located at Kashi Dhaba on the Varanasi-Ghazipur main road and was subsequently taken to Sadar Hospital for an initial medical assessment. She is currently housed at the One Stop Centre in the district.
The Chief Minister of Meghalaya, Conrad K. Sangma, also recognized the progress made in the case.
On X, he posted, "A significant breakthrough has been achieved by the Meghalaya Police in the Raja murder case within 7 days... Three assailants from Madhya Pradesh have been arrested, a female has surrendered, and operations are ongoing to apprehend one more assailant. Well done."
The couple, Raja and Sonam, had traveled to Meghalaya for their honeymoon and were exploring various locations when they went missing on May 23.
Ten days later, Raja's body was found in a deep gorge beneath the Weisawdong Parking Lot at Riat Arliang. A machete, believed to be the murder weapon, was discovered nearby.
At the time, Sonam was also reported missing, leading to a multi-state search.
