Is LSG's lower-order batting a lingering issue?

Key Takeaways
New Delhi, Dec 24 (NationPress) The Indian Premier League (IPL) team, Lucknow Super Giants (LSG), has enhanced their bowling lineup during the mini-auction for the 2026 season. However, they still face challenges regarding their batting depth, especially in the lower middle-order, according to former Indian opener Aakash Chopra.
Chopra stated, "While LSG has positioned Rishabh Pant at number three, the batting sequence raises uncertainties. Pant is capable of batting higher, and last season’s top order was remarkable—three out of the top four batsmen scored over 500 runs, a rare occurrence. The main concern lies in the lower order; players such as David Miller struggled to perform consistently in the previous season at positions five, six, and seven," during his commentary on JioStar.
"This season, LSG boasts a stronger bowling lineup with the likes of Wanindu Hasaranga, Mohammed Shami, Avesh Khan, Mayank Yadav, alongside Akash Singh, Prince Yadav, and Arjun Tendulkar. Despite these upgrades, the concern regarding lower-order batting remains unresolved," he noted.
Former India all-rounder Irfan Pathan acknowledged LSG’s bolstered bowling but reiterated worries about batting depth. "With Anrich Nortje and Hasaranga, LSG possesses robust options, particularly in fast bowling, which was essential. If the fast bowlers maintain their fitness, they could create a powerful combination.
“Hasaranga is a significant asset—last year, captain Rishabh Pant seemed to lack confidence in Ravi Bishnoi. Acquiring Hasaranga for 2 crore is a wise and economical choice.
“Nevertheless, with players like Ayush Badoni and Abdul Samad, LSG might have benefited from securing another top-tier batsman. I was anticipating a signing like Livingstone. In summary, there’s still a requirement for at least five more high-quality batsmen in the roster," he concluded.
The franchise's acquisition of Australian wicketkeeper Josh Inglis for Rs 8.6 crore also faced criticism, considering he is set to participate in only four IPL matches.
"When analyzing LSG's batting order, it closely resembles that of SRH. Procuring Josh, even if he were available for the entire season at that price, seems illogical since he likely won't make the starting line-up," former Indian opener Abhinav Mukund remarked.
