Kolkata, March 21 (NationPress) - Suvendu Adhikari, the Leader of the Opposition in the West Bengal Assembly, expressed strong disapproval on Saturday regarding Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee's characterization of Prime Minister Narendra Modi as an “infiltrator” during an Eid event in Kolkata. He labeled her comments as unacceptable and a misuse of a religious forum.
Adhikari's comments followed Banerjee's participation in Eid festivities at Red Road, where she launched a fierce critique against the BJP and PM Modi, reaffirming her dedication to the residents of West Bengal. Accompanying her was her nephew, Abhishek Banerjee.
In an interview with IANS, Suvendu Adhikari stated, “The Calcutta Khilafat Committee should evaluate Mamata Banerjee's statements. She has exploited a religious platform. PM Modi is not merely the Prime Minister of the BJP; he serves as the Prime Minister for all—Hindus, Muslims, Sikhs, and Christians. To label the Prime Minister an infiltrator is intolerable, and the Khilafat Committee must formally condemn this.”
He added that a significant “wave of change” is sweeping through the state, asserting that a reversal of this trend is impossible.
Earlier, Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee had accused the BJP-led Central government of trying to “strip away the voting rights” of citizens through the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls in advance of the forthcoming Assembly elections. She claimed this process, which has purportedly resulted in widespread deletions of voter names, is part of a larger strategy to manipulate the electoral landscape in West Bengal.
As several states prepare for elections in April, Assam, Kerala, and the Union Territory of Puducherry will cast their votes on April 9, while Tamil Nadu's elections are scheduled for April 23. In West Bengal, the initial phase of the Assembly elections will take place on April 23, followed by the second phase on April 29, with vote counting set for May 4.
