Maruti Suzuki FRONX hits 2 lakh exports in 38 months, fastest Indian SUV
Synopsis
Key Takeaways
Maruti Suzuki India Limited's compact SUV, the FRONX, has crossed the 2 lakh export milestone in under 38 months, making it the fastest SUV from India to achieve this feat, the company announced on Tuesday, 18 August. The milestone underscores India's growing footprint in global passenger vehicle markets.
Record-Breaking Export Trajectory
Exports of the Made-in-India FRONX commenced in June 2023. The model reached its first lakh exports in under 25 months, then added the second lakh in approximately 13 months — a pace that accelerated sharply, reflecting rising international demand. The vehicle is manufactured at Maruti Suzuki's Hansalpur facility in Gujarat and is currently being shipped to nearly 90 countries, including Japan.
What Maruti Suzuki's CEO Said
Hisashi Takeuchi, Managing Director and CEO of Maruti Suzuki India Limited, said the FRONX has been a key contributor to the company's export success. 'Every vehicle exported by Maruti Suzuki carries the hard work and pride of our people. These vehicles take a piece of Indian manufacturing to nearly 120 countries. FRONX has been a key contributor to Maruti Suzuki's success in exports. Since FY 24-25, it has been India's No. 1 exported passenger vehicle,' Takeuchi said.
He further noted that the pace of the second lakh was significantly faster than the first, 'underlining its growing demand in the international markets.' Takeuchi also said the company continues to showcase India's manufacturing capability aligned with the 'Make in India, Make for the World' vision.
Maruti Suzuki's Dominance in PV Exports
The FRONX milestone is part of a broader export leadership story. Maruti Suzuki has held the position of India's No. 1 passenger vehicle exporter for five consecutive years, shipping 17 models to nearly 120 countries. In Q1 FY 26-27, all three of India's top exported passenger vehicles were from Maruti Suzuki, with the company commanding a share of more than 55 per cent in passenger vehicle exports from India.
Top exported models in Q1 FY 26-27 include the FRONX, Jimny 5-Door, e VITARA, Dzire, and Baleno.
Why This Matters for Indian Manufacturing
The FRONX's export trajectory is notable in the context of India's broader 'Make in India' ambitions. A Gujarat-made SUV reaching 90 countries — including the demanding Japanese market — signals a maturation of India's automotive supply chain and quality standards. This comes amid growing global interest in Indian-origin vehicles, with domestic automakers increasingly competing on the international stage beyond traditional emerging-market destinations. Notably, the acceleration from the first to the second lakh exports suggests the FRONX is building brand equity abroad, not merely riding an initial launch wave.
