Northeast Frontier Railway Unveils Smart OFC System for Level Crossing Gates

Synopsis

On March 30, the NFR rolled out an innovative OFC-based communication system for Level Crossing Gates, revolutionizing safety and operational efficiency. Discover how this technology enhances real-time monitoring and communication.

Key Takeaways

Advanced Communication: The new OFC system significantly improves communication between Station Masters and gate operators.
Real-time Monitoring: Station Masters can now monitor gate operations directly from their rooms.
AI Noise Filtering: Enhances clarity of communication by eliminating background noise.
User-friendly Features: Includes one-touch calling and group communication, enhancing operational efficiency.
Commitment to Safety: Reflects NFR's dedication to leveraging technology for safer railway operations.

Guwahati, March 30 (NationPress) The Northeast Frontier Railway (NFR) has launched an innovative Integrated Voice-cum-Data Communication System that operates on Optical Fibre Cable (OFC) technology at Level Crossing (LC) Gates. This initiative is a major advancement aimed at bolstering safety and enhancing operational efficiency, as stated by officials on Monday.

According to NFR’s Chief Public Relations Officer, Kapinjal Kishore Sharma, the new system will be deployed at 50 LC Gates utilizing Indian Railways’ reliable OFC network, which guarantees consistent and dependable communication between Station Masters and gate operators.

Sharma mentioned that the system has already been effectively installed at Senchoa Station and Barpathar Station, integrating both non-interlocked and interlocked gates.

With this system in place, Station Masters can oversee the live status of gates, including their opening and closing actions, directly from their rooms. This significantly enhances control, coordination, and response time.

The system is outfitted with high-quality voice communication, integrated voice logging, an Internet Protocol-based Public Address system, and CCTV integration, enabling thorough audio-visual oversight of LC Gates.

Officials have noted that it comes with user-friendly features such as one-touch calling, group communication, and battery health monitoring, all aimed at boosting operational efficiency and reliability.

A notable feature of this system is its artificial intelligence-enabled noise filtering at the master console. This capability effectively removes background noise, like train horns and station announcements, during critical communications, ensuring clarity and precision.

Additionally, the system facilitates centralized monitoring of all LC gate cameras and allows public address announcements through supplementary Internet Protocol-based Public Address units positioned at gate locations. This ensures continuous, real-time communication and enhanced situational awareness for railway personnel.

This initiative reflects the Northeast Frontier Railway’s dedication to employing cutting-edge technology to reinforce safety protocols, upgrade communication infrastructure, and ensure effective management of railway operations, particularly at critical Level Crossing Gates, Sharma emphasized.

The Northeast Frontier Railway, based in Maligaon near Guwahati, serves the Northeastern states, along with seven districts in West Bengal and five districts in North Bihar.

Point of View

The introduction of this advanced communication system by the Northeast Frontier Railway is a commendable step toward enhancing safety at Level Crossing Gates. Leveraging modern technology, this initiative promises improved operational efficiency and proactive safety measures, which is crucial for railway operations in the region.
