Key Takeaways
New Delhi, Feb 7 (NationPress) The detention of Independent MP Pappu Yadav from Purnea, linked to a case dating back to 1995, sparked intense political reactions from various parties on Saturday. Leaders expressed differing opinions regarding the legality, timing, and motives behind the police operation.
In response, LJP (Ram Vilas) MP Arun Bharti emphasized the significance of upholding constitutional principles and adhering to the law. He stated, “Any individual serving as a Member of Parliament must completely honor democratic values, parliamentary standards, and the law,” reminding that elected officials are not above legal proceedings.
Bihar Minister Dilip Jaiswal supported the police's actions, claiming they were executed strictly following judicial orders. “He frequently makes such comments; it's his nature. The reality is that warrants and attachment orders are issued by the court, and it is the police's responsibility to comply. In a rule of law, police act according to the law,” Jaiswal told IANS.
Conversely, the Opposition vehemently condemned the arrest, suggesting it stemmed from political retribution.
Congress spokesperson Surendra Rajput accused the Bihar government of acting out of trepidation. “Pappu Yadav is highlighting the anarchy of the Bihar government. The Nitish Kumar administration, backed by the BJP and Home Minister Samrat Choudhary, is fearful. Yadav has been raising awareness about corruption, poor governance, and lawlessness in Bihar, which the government finds intolerable,” Rajput asserted.
He further questioned the timing of the arrest, asking, “Why was he not apprehended sooner? Why now? It’s because the Bihar government is scared.”
Congress MP Sukhdeo Bhagat also criticized the way the arrest was executed, particularly during an active session of Parliament.
“Yesterday, I was watching the coverage on television. The police behavior was astonishing. After all, he is a Member of Parliament, and the session was ongoing. He was neither presented with a warrant nor was the process handled appropriately,” Bhagat claimed.
Pappu Yadav was taken into custody late Friday night by Patna Police at his home amidst considerable drama. This arrest followed a court-issued property attachment warrant related to a forgery case from 1995, after he had repeatedly failed to appear in court.
The case revolves around a dispute filed at the Gardanibagh police station. According to the complaint, the property owner alleged that his asset was deceitfully used by the MP to operate his office. Complainant Vinod Bihari Lal asserted that his house was rented under false pretenses and subsequently utilized as a Member of Parliament’s office, a fact he claimed was obscured during the agreement process.
