During the 39th Convocation Ceremony of Indira Gandhi National Open University (IGNOU), where over 320,000 students were awarded degrees, diplomas, and certificates, the Vice President remarked that Bharat's core strength stems from its commitment to ethical values.
He stressed that the evolution of modern society must harmonize with traditional values, asserting that scientific progress should be informed by ethical considerations.
In light of the recently adopted National Education Policy (NEP), Vice-President Radhakrishnan highlighted IGNOU's introduction of four-year undergraduate programs featuring multiple exit options, thereby enhancing the flexibility and learner-centricity of higher education.
He also praised the incorporation of Indian knowledge systems within contemporary education.
The Vice President pointed out that innovative tools such as Artificial Intelligence possess the potential to enrich learning experiences, bolster student support, and facilitate personalized education.
He remarked that there is no reason to fear advancements in technology.
Recalling the initial apprehensions surrounding computer adoption in India, he noted that, despite fears of job losses, they ultimately resulted in job creation and contributed to national development.
The Vice President also unveiled certificates on Digi Locker through the National Academic Depository (NAD) to enhance accessibility for learners nationwide.
Additionally, he launched the IGNOU Alumni Portal, which boasts over five million registered users.
Among those present were Delhi Lieutenant Governor Taranjit Singh Sandhu, IGNOU Vice-Chancellor Uma Kanjilal, and various dignitaries.
In his address, the Vice President highlighted IGNOU's transformative role, describing it as a cornerstone of India's open and distance learning framework, significantly broadening access to higher education.
He emphasized the university's inclusive outreach, noting that it serves over 1.4 million students, with 56% being women and 58% hailing from rural and marginalized backgrounds.
He concluded by stating that the university's student population surpasses that of many countries, showcasing its vital contribution to educational equity, social mobility, and national progress.
