Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Slovak Prime Minister Robert Fico on Monday, 15 June agreed to elevate bilateral relations to a Comprehensive Partnership during their summit in Bratislava — the first-ever visit by an Indian Prime Minister to Slovakia. The two leaders reviewed the full spectrum of bilateral ties and identified new areas of cooperation spanning trade, defence, technology, and culture.

Key Outcomes of the Bratislava Summit

The bilateral discussions produced several concrete outcomes, according to the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA). Agreements were reached in the areas of digital technology, defence, cybersecurity, post-quantum technologies, audio-visual creation, mobility, and scientific cooperation including nuclear energy. A Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) on digital technology was also signed, aimed at expanding cooperation in digital public infrastructure.

The leaders further explored avenues in trade and investment, space, education and culture, and talent mobility and people-to-people exchanges.

India-EU Free Trade Agreement in Focus

Both leaders welcomed the India-European Union Free Trade Agreement (FTA), describing its implementation as a development that 'will unlock substantial opportunities in trade, manufacturing, investment and employment generations, particularly for the youth,' according to the MEA. Slovakia, as an EU member state, stands to play a bridging role as India deepens its economic engagement with the bloc.

Addressing a joint press conference following the summit at the iconic Bratislava Castle, PM Modi said: 'I express my heartfelt gratitude to Prime Minister Fico for the warm welcome. He is an experienced leader and also a true friend of India. His friendship and unwavering commitment have played a special role in taking India-Slovakia relations to new heights.'

Modi described the elevation to a Comprehensive Partnership as reflecting 'our shared trust, shared priorities, and our shared vision for the future.' He also termed technology a 'key pillar' of the future partnership between the two nations. On X, Modi wrote: 'I thank Prime Minister Fico for the warm welcome at the iconic Bratislava Castle. We shall keep working together to further strengthen the India-Slovakia friendship.'

Cultural Diplomacy on Display

On the sidelines of the summit, both leaders viewed an exhibition of paintings created by Slovak children inspired by Panchatantra and Jataka tales — ancient Indian narrative traditions. The MEA noted that 'the artworks underscore growing cultural bonds between India and Slovakia,' signalling that the partnership extends well beyond strategic and economic dimensions.

Broader Context and What Comes Next

The Bratislava summit is part of PM Modi's broader European diplomatic outreach. The two sides also exchanged views on regional and global issues, including reform of the United Nations.
