Patna, March 10 (NationPress) Bihar BJP MLA, Haribhushan Thakur Bachaul, has ignited a significant political uproar with his remarks advising the Muslim community to stay indoors during Holi or be prepared for color to be thrown on them.
His comments have elicited strong backlash, further escalating tensions following recent communal unrest in Sambhal, Uttar Pradesh.
“Muslims should remain at home on Holi; otherwise, they risk being colored. There are 52 Jummas (Fridays) in a year and just one Holi, so it would be best for Muslims to stay inside. Should they venture out, they ought to exhibit a big heart and not resist if abir or gulal is applied to them,” Bachaul stated.
The political atmosphere in Bihar has grown tense, with opposition parties labeling his statement as both divisive and incendiary.
Numerous leaders have denounced the remarks, accusing Bachaul of exacerbating communal frictions as Holi approaches.
Muslim leaders and representatives of the community have condemned the statement, terming it an infringement on personal liberties.
Bihar Minister Jama Khan responded to Bachaul’s comments by stressing the importance of unity and harmony among communities. He noted that while Muslims typically avoid stained attire during Friday prayers (Jumma Namaz), any accidental coloring during Holi should not lead to division.
“Bihar celebrates all festivals with a sense of brotherhood. No one should intentionally throw color on worshippers, but if it occurs accidentally, it should not become a point of contention,” Khan remarked.
Former Bihar Chief Minister Rabri Devi launched a fierce critique of the BJP regarding this matter.
She accused the BJP of attempting to provoke communal discord and warned that the people of Bihar would reject them in the forthcoming elections.
“The people of Bihar will teach the BJP a lesson and oust them from Bihar. If PM Modi has the courage, he should expel Muslims from Bihar and the nation,” she asserted.
As Bihar's political scene heats up, this controversy is poised to become a central issue in the impending elections. Given previous incidents, such statements may polarize voters further and disrupt social harmony.
