Mumbai, Feb 13 (NationPress) The Dharavi Redevelopment Initiative (DRI), designed to convert Asia's largest slum into a contemporary urban center, has successfully conducted a remarkable total of over 50,000 door-to-door surveys.
The ambitious $3 billion project, spearheaded by the Adani Group, has garnered substantial local backing.
The recent survey figures represent the highest in the history of the Mumbai Slum Rehabilitation Authority (SRA), providing a significant boost to both the survey teams and the residents of Dharavi, who are keen to see the redevelopment progress.
As per the latest survey data, numbering for 85,000 tenements has been finalized, and over 50,000 have been surveyed in person.
Around 150,000 tenements are set to be rehabilitated, promising improved housing, enhanced infrastructure, and greater economic prospects while safeguarding the dignity of Dharavi's inhabitants.
A representative from Navbharat Mega Developers Pvt Ltd, the Adani Group’s agency overseeing the redevelopment, stated that after numerous unsuccessful attempts over the decades, Dharavi's redevelopment has now gained momentum.
“Upon completion, this initiative will establish a global standard for human-centric slum redevelopment. This achievement highlights our dedication to advancing with exceptional facilities,” the spokesperson commented.
In December of the previous year, the Dharavi Redevelopment Project Private Ltd (DRPPL) was rebranded as Navbharat Mega Developers Private Ltd (NMDPL), aligning with the company’s vision of creating a modern, inclusive, and vibrant community.
Unlike previous slum rehabilitation efforts, residents will be relocated to well-structured townships rather than high-rise slums, featuring amenities such as spacious roads, green areas, and efficient water and sewage systems. These townships will also host multi-modal transport hubs.
The spokesperson further noted that the townships would encompass educational institutions, healthcare facilities, playgrounds, community centers, and shopping complexes.
“This redevelopment, along with infrastructure improvements, will not only uplift the lives of relocated Dharavikars but also enhance the infrastructure and living conditions for the wider neighborhood and Mumbaikars,” the spokesperson added.
NMDPL is a special purpose vehicle (SPV) created as a joint venture between the Maharashtra government and the Adani Group. The name Navbharat, meaning 'New India', signifies the immense potential this project holds for a brighter future.
