Aizawl, Jan 15 (NationPress) Former Union Minister and Army chief, Gen Vijay Kumar Singh (retd) arrived in Mizoram on Wednesday and is set to take the oath of office as the Governor on Thursday, according to officials.

A senior government representative from Mizoram indicated that Gauhati High Court Chief Justice Vijay Bishnoi will officiate the oath ceremony for Gen Singh (retd) as the 25th Governor of Mizoram at the Circular Lawn in Raj Bhavan.

The Governor-Designate of Mizoram and his wife, First Lady-Designate Bharti Singh, received a warm welcome upon their arrival, with Chief Minister Lalduhoma greeting them at Lengpui Airport.

In attendance were Chief Minister Lalduhoma and his spouse Liansailovi, Assembly Speaker Lalbiakzama, Home Minister K. Sapdanga, Chief Secretary Khilli Ram Meena, Director General of Police Anil Shukla, along with other high-ranking civil, security, and military officials.

A formal guard of honour was presented to the Governor-Designate at the state's only airport, located about 30 km from Aizawl.

The former Governor of Mizoram, Hari Babu Kambhampati, who served for over three years and five months, departed the state on January 2 and assumed the gubernatorial role in Odisha the following day.

Gen Singh (retd) previously held the position of the 24th Chief of Army Staff. After retiring, he ventured into politics, winning a seat as a Member of Parliament from Ghaziabad representing the BJP in the 2014 and 2019 Lok Sabha elections.

During Prime Minister Narendra Modi's first term, he was appointed as the Minister of State for External Affairs, Minister of State (Independent Charge) for the Ministry of Development of North Eastern Region (DoNER), and Minister of State for Statistics and Programme Implementation. In Modi's second term, he took on roles as Minister of State for Road Transport and Highways and Civil Aviation.
