Chandigarh, July 28 (NationPress) In response to significant public backlash, the Haryana government announced on Monday the cancellation of Vikas Barala's appointment as Assistant Advocate General (AAG). Vikas, the son of BJP Rajya Sabha MP Subhash Barala, was one of the 97 law officers selected for the Advocate-General’s office.
This decision follows considerable criticism from the principal opposition party, Congress, and a strongly phrased letter addressed to Chief Minister Nayab Singh Saini by 45 former IAS officers from various parts of the country.
Currently on bail, Vikas Barala is involved in a stalking case and is facing trial. He and his accomplice, Ashish, have been accused of stalking and attempting to kidnap Varnika Kundu, the daughter of a Haryana IAS officer. The hearing for this case is scheduled in a Chandigarh court on August 2.
The case has drawn national attention to concerns regarding women’s safety and the implications of political influence on judicial processes. In 2017, the police submitted a charge sheet against Vikas and his friend, including testimonies from 48 witnesses.
The complainant, Varnika, and her father, Virender Kundu, are key witnesses in this case and have pledged to pursue justice despite any external pressures. The witness list also includes Varnika's friend, the police officers who responded to the emergency call, and those who apprehended the accused.
Noteworthy appointments in the Advocate-General’s office also encompass Anu Pal, sister of Justice Lisa Gill from the Punjab and Haryana High Court, and other prominent figures such as Swati Batra, Ruchi Sekhri—a BJP leader from Punjab, and Nitin Kaushal, son of Punjab’s former chief secretary, Sarvesh Kaushal.
Overall, the government has announced the appointment of over 95 law officers, including Assistant Advocates-Generals, Deputy Advocates-Generals, Senior Deputy Advocates-Generals, and Additional Advocates-Generals.
